Seeking justice
Over the past week I had the pleasure of being informed and entertained through the public speaking talents of our students. Year 11 Head Girl/Boy speeches and Year 10 Atticus Finch presentations were of a very high quality.
The Atticus Finch Justice Award was initiated in 2011 and exemplifies the College’s motto of Seek Justice, drawing upon the courage of Atticus Finch from the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the Religious Education concepts of conscience and justice. The English and Religious Education Learning Areas saw parallels in what they were studying and decided that a speech focusing on a current issue was a way of translating what is learned in class to the world in which we live.
The speech allows for the maturity of students in Year 10’s to shine through; Year 10’s have a greater moral compass and the ability to be discerning on the issues that are pertinent to their lives. The Atticus Finch Justice Award provides an opportunity for students to examine their conscience and to touch people’s hearts.
The stimulus material for this year’s Award was selected because of the multiple challenges our society has faced in 2020. In asking students to reflect on how ‘seeking justice’ leads to brighter futures, this year’s task shifted the focus to a hope for the future and for the ability for all to make a difference. The Atticus Finch Justice Award is a respected and valued College activity as it encapsulates what we stand for as a school community. The finalists spoke with eloquence and passion.
Our prospective student leaders were asked to discuss what makes a good leader at John XXIII College. We learned of their love of their school and their determination to make a positive contribution. It was also fascinating to listen to the impact that current and former student leaders have had on their personal growth and development.
Congratulations to all students involved. We have young people of integrity and commitment at our College.
