Sun Room Term 3 Newsletter

Term 3 wrap up

What a term it has been, we thought that things were going back to normal at the beginning and we would all be able to do things together but unfortunently this was not meant to be. We were hit hard by stage 4 restrictions Victoria wide which meant that a lot of you had to stay home.

During this time we tried our best to keep you all involved and give you fun ways to keep those little ones of yours entertained through community posts, setting up a new youtube channel and even did weekly zoom meetings which were interesting and fun plus it was also a good way to see all those faces we had been missing.

While we were in lockdown a number of our children celebrated birthdays we would like to wish a big sun room happy birthday to Ying Ying, Vincy, Anna, Sophia, Charlotte.S who all turned 3, we would also like to wish Ebony and Tu a happy 2nd birthday. As well as our Educator Yumin.

Term 3 Learning

For our term 3 learning we have been learning a about feelings and what they mean. A number of our children have really been showing an interest in imaginative play in particular baby dolls, this experience has really brought out the children’s caring and nurturing side, this also allows and helps the children to act with care and empathy not only during play but towards each other. At first this was only meant to be a short 2 week experience however due to the children’s continued enjoyment we have been growing and extending this and their interests continue to grow as a result.

Ann-Maree discovered that while we were outside one day Nikolas and Rayan found a roll of ribbon and their enjoyment was very clear and plain for us all to see. As a result of this child led play we came up with the idea of loose parts play, so all educators have been busy collecting a number of items that the children can play with and explore. Some of the children have been so excited (Sadie & Scarlett) by this that they have been collecting natural loose parts from their gardens, this has prompted us to now have both a manmade loose parts and a natural loose parts station.

Art and craft corner

We have had a wonderful Term 3 exploring and challenging the children with an assortment of art and craft experiences.

Art and craft experiences give children a sense of achievement and allows them to take pride in their work which helps build confidence.

This term we worked on fine motor development and creativity.

We encouraged the children to play and experiment in a fun and relaxed environment.

Some of our favourite experiences included easel painting, painting with our feet and the making and creating of our Spoonville people.

We are looking forward to offering more exciting experiences to the children throughout Term 4.

We would love to know what some of your favourite art experiences are that you do at home.

Sunroom Sports

Sun room sports program commenced in July. Lina does a fortnightly program. Before the children get into the planned sports activities they will do a quick warm up with educators to make sure they are all stretched and ready to go.

Doing age appropriate sports can help children practice their gross motor skill, like throwing, catching, jumping, running and hopping. During sports program, children learn how to team work, take a turn, which build up children’s emotion wellbeing.

Next term, we will keep doing sports with children to support children’s gross motor skill, emotion wellbeing developing and building their resilience.

Music & Movement, Yoga & Fine motor development

This term I have tried to do some yoga with the children but as there were less children I mixed it up and taught the children the “Nutbush” (at least attempted too) the children at first weren’t too sure about it but after a week, the children got involved by dancing. I then taught the children the “hokeypokey” which all the children got involved in and had heaps of fun by the end of the week.

Music and movement is a wonderful way to nurture children’s development in a supportive, flexible and playful environment. Some of the most important milestones for toddlers are on language, sensory and motor development.

Music and movement benefit a child's development in many ways.

-Participating in a group.

-Social skills.

-Express emotions.

-Enhance self‐concept by sharing music and dance of each other's culture.

-Refine listening skills, noticing changes in tempo or pitch.

-Awareness of movement and body positions.

-Creativity and imagination.

Yoga for children is intended to be fun and may include age-appropriate games, animal sounds and creative names for poses It includes poses to increase strength, flexibility, and coordination

Benefits of Yoga

-Yoga helps children manage their anxiety.

-Yoga improves children's emotional regulation.

-Yoga boosts children's self-esteem.

-Yoga increases children's body awareness and mindfulness.

-Yoga enhances children's concentration and memory.

-Yoga develops children's strength and flexibility.

This term along with doing yoga with the children I have stated to do affirmations, children Need Positive Affirmations to Gain Confidence.

A child with confidence feels as though they can take on the world. When the adults in their life are speaking powerful words into them, they feel more capable and will be more willing to take on new challenges.  The affirmations that I have been teaching are:

I am Brave       I am loved

I am Kind         I am beautiful

 I am smart

Moving in to term 4

Moving into term 4 we will be doing a few things new exciting and different.

Even though it feels like this year has only just begun in so many ways, it is time no now start preparing our children for that next step which is moving from sun room to forest room. Some ways we will be doing this is by starting to do progressive meals we will start off slow by doing morning tea first and then add lunch. This will hopefully help make a smooth transition for everyone children and their new educators.

During term 4 we will be focusing a lot on life skills as all our children are getting older, this will be things such as using our words, self serving and many more, again all this to help to make the move into the next room as smooth as we possibly can.

As the weather gets warmer in term 4 we will be spending a lot more time outdoors. Term 4 will also be our trail run for introducing new plans for outside, sports, science, music/movement/yoga.
