Dr Carr-Gregg highlighted some poignant reminders of our role as parents to set the emotional tone, and model hope and optimism. He talked about the importance of maintaining a developmental perspective – understanding the neurological stage of our children and that their feelings of frustration, possibly sadness and anger are all age-appropriate responses to our current situation.

Included in the summary notes attached are some practical strategies families can adopt during the COVID-19 era.

He further unpacked how to keep your child motivated during this time by sharing a simple, yet effective formula:

  1. Set realistic goals with your child – daily, weekly
  2. Make a plan – write it down
  3. Make the goals public – share these as a family
  4. Break the goal into manageable parts – encourage regular breaks, get outside, keep hydrated
  5. Celebrate accomplishments – no matter how small
  6. Encourage – reassure them that they are doing their best
  7. Take interest – reflect, listen and be present

Your own personal wellbeing is as important as your family's – children will take the lead from us. Dr Carr-Gregg talked about the impact of diet, exercise and sleep on mood.
