Atticus Finch Justice Award 2022

The Atticus Finch Justice award was initiated in 2011 at John XXIII College and encapsulates the College motto of Seek Justice through the study of Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird in English and the unit of work focusing on freedom in Religious Education.

The award is also linked to the College Magis program which highlights the Ignatian notion of 'more' and asks individuals to question: what more can I do for God? What more can I do for others?

This year students engaged with three stimulus materials providing a springboard to a discussion of their life role models and made links to justice and freedom through the idea of service to self, God and community.

The process for the choice of finalists comes from all Year 10 students preparing a five minute speech in which they respond to the ideas of justice and freedom within the context of the texts that they have studied and in particular to the stimulus texts. The speeches form part of the formal assessment for both English and Religious Education. Two students are chosen from each Religious Education class and these students go on to perform their speeches in front of the entire Year 10 cohort. The winner as chosen by the Principal, the Learning Area Coordinators of English and Religious Education, the Magis Coordinator and a guest judge will be awarded the Atticus Finch Justice Award for 2022 at Presentation Night in November.

The 2022 finalists are:

  • Asha Paton
  • Xavier Jeffery
  • Massimo Torre
  • Zach Ferguson-Allen
  • Maya Mintz
  • Gemma Bailey
  • Lucy Galvin
  • Thomas Symington
  • Darcy Schubert
  • Angela Williams
  • Noah Dale
  • Evie Moody

2022 Western Australian Constitutional Convention

Last week, a select group of talented Year 11 Politics & Law students took part in the annual School’s Constitutional Convention. The Convention, which was held at the Constitutional Centre in West Perth, was attended by more than 80 students. This year’s Convention discussed topics such as the role of advocacy, a Voice to Parliament, the reality of judicial appointments and the role of the Governor-General. Students heard from a panel experts including Professors from the University of Western Australia and the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy within Curtin University – with the keynote address delivered by Ms Fiona Hunt, Deputy Director General of Aboriginal Engagement and Community Policy.

Students who attended are invited to apply to the National Schools Constitutional Convention to be held early next year in Canberra.  We commend these Year 11 students on their ongoing political engagement.

Expressions of Interest: New Inspire Representatives – Secondary

The Inspire program at John XXIII College was instigated in 2013 in response to a request from the College Leadership to promote more parent engagement and to address arising social issues affecting the students and their parents/guardians.

We are looking to appoint two new Inspire representatives one each for Primary and Secondary. Inspire representatives seek to provide high quality presenters with excellent reputations in their field. The successful candidates will work with College Leadership to seek presenters / educators that support the curriculum of the students, ensure the correct procedure for Funding Submissions is followed and report back to the Parents’ Association meetings each term.

If you are interested in an Inspire representative role please forward your expression of interest to the Parents’ Association President, Paula Hackett, on parentsassociation@johnxxiii.edu.au.

ACC A Division Athletics Team

Next week on Wednesday 14 September, John XXIII College will compete in the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival. Thank you to all students who have displayed incredible commitment to our early morning training sessions, it’s wonderful to see the passion and dedication to represent the College. Last year, our 2021 team of athletes came the closest any school has come to breaking the 22 year rein of Sacred Heart College, falling short by 4 points!!!. We can’t wait to see all the students in action once again this year. Whatever the result this year, we are proud of what they have all achieved.

A reminder that our final session will be Monday 12 September 3:30pm-4:30pm followed by the team dinner 5:00pm-6:15pm. If you have not yet put in your RSVP please send an email with your RSVP and any dietary requirements to jessica.pillera@cewa.edu.au
