History Enrichment Program
History Enrichment Program
On Thursday 20th October 2022 students Serena Maghamez of Year 8 and Yvonne Le of Year 10 participated in the History Teachers Associate of Victoria History Enrichment Program. Taylors Lakes Secondary College was fortunate to have 2 nominees secure a place in the program as only 50 Students in the State were given this opportunity.
This is an excursion run by the HTAV in partnership with Federation University as a program where keen young minds who seek enriched learning opportunities to demonstrate sound ability and their passion in their history studies. Students were selected for their interest in advancing their Historical Comprehension, Analysis and Research Skills.
On the day students travelled to the State Library of Victoria and began at approximately 9:30am with a meet-and-great with some of the brightest young History students in Victoria. Students undertook a Speed Networking program where they quickly became familiar with their peers. Next, they undertook a range of lectures and activities looking at The History of Captured Knowledge (hosted by Dr Jo Clyne), The History of Quack Medicine (hosted by Dr David Waldron of Federation University), as well as an investigation task looking at how to model students' own Passion Project.
Students were availed some of the afternoon to Tour the State Library and some of the historic texts held within The Dome (La Trobe Reading Room) and the corridors surrounding it. It was in the final sessions where Serena and Yvonne were challenged to begin to investigate and plan thebeginning of their own Passion Project, focused on discovering through Historical Enquiry where their own passion lies. This proved to be a successful and fun activity, catering to some of Taylors Lakes Secondary College's highest achieving students. It was a pleasure to be able to spend the day fostering students' interest in the Humanities, and to learn in such a beautiful and grand building in our wonderful city,

The History Enrichment Program provided students with the great opportunity to learn valuable historical thinking skills which could be applied when studying VCE. During the presentations, we reviewed a range of historical topics that were both informative and engaging. It was enjoyable participating in discussions with like-minded, friendly students that share the same enthusiasm in history as I do.
