Prep

Our focus in literacy, education in faith and inquiry has been friendship and reflecting on how we can demonstrate the qualities of friendship. We read, listened and responded to the story The Golden Rule written by Ilene Cooper. The story is about a grandfather explaining the Golden Rule about treating others to his grandson. The Golden Rule is to treat others as you would like to be treated. The Golden Rule is reflected in many cultures and religions. In pairs and using sock puppets, the students shared times that they did not treat a friend with kindness or fairness and how they could change the situation. As a class, we discussed how we can treat our friends with love, kindness, fairness, and family and how we would like others to treat us.

In writing, the Preps are continuing to write simple sentences using tricky words and applying their letter sound knowledge to spell words.

Maths

This week our Maths lessons have been hands-on experiences. The Preps have been measuring the length of different objects using informal units of measurement such as feet, counting blocks, hand spans and icy pole sticks. They have also compared and described the length of objects using the words such as longer, shorter and shorter. These activities also scaffolded the students' team working and communication skills. We created bar graphs to represent the length of objects visually. The bar graph provided the opportunity for students to discuss the sizes of objects using the informal units of measurement and compare the accuracy of each unit of measurement.
