2023 Access Monash – E-Mentoring Program

Gallery Image

The College in partnership with Monash University offers students several opportunities to connect and engage with university via the Access Monash Program

The E-Mentoring program offers Year 11 and 12 students the chance to be paired with experienced and engaged Monash student mentors to work in a one-on-one mentoring relationship for the final two years of secondary school.

Mentees receive individual support from their mentor who has walked a similar life path to them, in preparation for their future study and career. Through this, mentees can gain insight into university life. They learn from the experience of their mentors, participate in campus visits, and develop connections to university.

Running across Terms 2 and 3 students meet online once per fortnight to discuss a range of topics along with gaining an insight into the courses offered at Monash and finding out what it is like be a 'uni student'. The support offered to senior students at this critical time in their education is invaluable.

Applications for the 2023 program are now open and close Friday 14th October 2022.

The Monash Access team will visit Bairnsdale Secondary College Monday 13th September from 9.00 am -10.00 am for a presentation to senior students. If you would like to know more, please contact Careers.

Year 12 interviews

Careers have conducted over 100 interviews with our Year 12 students over the past 2 weeks. Our discussions have been around University and TAFE applications, scholarships, and alternative pathways such as apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment.

The discussions have been very positive, and the students have found the information valuable and very informative. We hope with this support every student will have the opportunity to achieve their goals and a successful future.

We are really looking forward to speaking to the Year 11 and 10 students about their future career pathways.

Scholarships applications

Scholarship applications are linked directly through your VTAC account.

Do I need to provide evidence?

When completing your scholarships application, you may be required to provide evidence. If you don't your application will not be considered.

Some scholarship categories require you to complete a written response, a statement of support or financial evidence. You can find out what is required by looking at the demonstration scholarships application before you apply.

Additional supporting evidence is not needed for some scholarship categories, like community service or leadership.

How to complete a written response:

Depending on the categories you select, the scholarship application may require several different written responses. Make sure you:

  • read the instructions carefully
  • pay close attention to the questions you are asked
  • write in your own words. This is not a grammar test—institutions simply want to know your story from your point of view
  • complete a draft first and check you have answered everything
  • make sure you meet the character limit. These include all punctuation and spaces
  • Look out for the word ‘impact’ (see below)

Description and ‘impact’

Some questions ask you to describe the impact your circumstances have had on your education or daily life.  Another way of putting it, is how have your circumstances affected your education or daily life. The following example shows you the difference between briefly describing the circumstances and then describing the impact:
