Year 10 students lend a hand

This year there was an opportunity for some Year 10 students to attend the Year 7 camp as student leaders. The Year 10 students showed amazing leadership skills as they encouraged groups during their activities, helped out during meal times, and organised and ran a trivia night. The students even found time to do their homework for the classes that they missed as a result of being on camp.

The Year 7 team say a massive thank you the Year 10 students who attended and contributed to our successful camp, you are all a fantastic asset to our College.

Year 11 VCE Food Studies

On Thursday 25th August, Chef Greg from the Australian Culinary Federation conducted workshops with each food studies class.  A great day was had by everyone.

Chef Greg's speciality is chocolate. Chef Greg was able to work with the students as a result of sponsorship from the Australian Culinary Federation. The students participated in a 3 hour hands on learning session, creating chocolates with different centres using both dark and milk chocolate. Greg imparted his knowledge of the processes involved and then the students created and produced beautiful chocolates , packaging them to take home.

Next Tuesday the same students will be learning how to produce different types of pancakes with Chef Jarrod and Chef Greg.

There are a number of session we have organised for our Year 11 and Year 12 VCE Food Students over Term 3 and Term 4. These will include another chocolate session for Year 12 students and also a session on preparing and cooking Fish with a Chef from one of our local restaurants.

VCE Health and Human Development

VCE students as part of their Health and Human Development Class participated in a Egg-Baby Task. The task was to explore the concepts of considerations of becoming parents and child development.

The students were surprised to turn up to class and become proud parents of egg-babies. They had time to decorate, make names and carriers before taking them home. The task went from Thursday to Tuesday, the students did an EGGcellent job and we had a 63% survival rate.

Here are some quotes and pictures from the student’s journals:

  • It was funny and I got a lot of weird looks from strangers, I felt proud of myself because I kept the egg crack free and safe -  Lydia
  • My egg cracked when I was putting my books in my locker - Anna
  • I think I would need to give up most of my social life to look after the baby - Darcey
  • This is officially the last day of me being a parent, I have had enough - Tyler

Year 12 Health and Human Development (HHD) Incursion

On 12th August, Corlein from International Needs Australia (INA), a non-government aid organisation and charity, came to school to run a 2 hour incursion with the Year 12 Health and Human Development Class. She spoke about projects INA are currently involved in and showed us lots of videos of the people working in and benefiting from the projects. This links to the topics we’re currently learning about in HHD classes.

Corlein has also lived in 10 countries and had lots of great stories of her experiences she could share with the class about global health and development. After talking about how many people in low-income countries have to walk huge distances to find water and carry it back to their homes, the students participated in a water carrying race. We also got to try some maize porridge that is a staple food in Tanzania, one of the countries Corlein has lived in.

Corlein was very impressed with our students and the thoughtful questions they asked.  Corlein also commented that they were the most engaged group of students she’d had the pleasure of working with in a long time.  Well done Year 12 HHD class!
