Year 7 Summit Camp!

In August 138 Year 7 students travelled to The Summit in Trafalgar for three fantastic days of camp. Students were asked to challenge themselves mentally and physically throughout the different activities, which were designed to take them out of their personal comfort zone.

The highlights of the camp included: the Monster Course, the Giant Swing, the Sky Bridge, the Summit Window and the Leap of Faith. Throughout these activities, new friendships were formed as students encouraged each other to push beyond their boundaries and complete the challenges they faced.

The group was divided up into 10 teams for the three days, and this formed the basis of a challenge against each other in the Monster Course. This was a physical race around the camp over 16 obstacles and activities designed in a similar format to army commando courses. Students had to carry three tyres around the course, which included mudpits, balance activities, water activities and endurance events. The teams had to work together to get around the course in the best times, but also using teamwork to make sure everyone was successful in completing it.

The Leap of Faith tested students greatly. The students climbed up about 10 metres on a tower, walked out on a narrow plank and then jumped toward a trapeze, swung on the trapeze and then hung upside down and dropped. Even the best were challenged.

A highlight was on the last morning. The students, staff and teachers played a game of ‘Jockeys Up’, which was a partner game, competing against the other 60+ pairs. Teams were to follow instructions ‘jockey up’, ‘jockey down’, ‘jockey under’, and ‘round the world’.

This game had students and teachers jumping onto each other’s backs, crawling under legs, and running full pelt around the circle, with the last team to follow the instruction ‘out’ and having to sit in the middle. It was very entertaining to see students and teachers laughing, yelling, and slipping in the mud as they tried to outrace each other.

This year there was an opportunity for a select number of Year 10 students to attend camp as student leaders. And wow did they rise to the occasion. Throughout the camp, the Year 10 students encouraged groups during their activities, helped out during meal times, they organised and ran a trivia night, and they even found time for homework to make sure they didn’t fall behind in their classes. We owe these  students a massive thank you for taking the time to come on camp. They are a fantastic asset to our College.

A great camp was had by all, and every student and teacher should be very proud of themselves for ‘getting comfortable being uncomfortable’. A big thank you goes to the Year 7 hub team and Clare Stone for all their work in getting it to happen.
