Due to the overall success of the team the students who placed first in individual events and first and second in the 800m and 1500m went on to compete at the Southern Metropolitan Region Athletics on Thursday 6 October.
Congratulations to all students who competed to give their best performance on the day. Thank you also to Ms Villiers, Ms Coffa and Mr Haverfield for supporting the students on the day.
Southern Metropolitan Regional Athletics
On Thursday 6 October, a team of thirty-eight students competed at the SMR Athletics competition at Casey Fields Athletics Track. At first the day did not look promising, with a very wet track and clouds looming overhead. As a result of this outlook the organisers cancelled all high jump events. Our two competitors – Julie and Tarith - will now be competing on Tuesday 11 October. However, the day did fine up, and we were privileged to watch many excellent athletes from over sixty schools in the region compete in their preferred events.
At the end of competition Nossal students had two 1st place getters, five 2nd place getters, and six 3rd place getters.
Three students have successfully qualified to compete at the State Athletics Championships on Monday 17 October at Lakeside Stadium.
Nicholas FANG (Under 15 Boys 1500m),
Senula WIJESEKARA (Under 15 Boys Discus) and
Shivesh VAHEESAN (Under 18-20 Boys 110m hurdles)
We wish them luck and look forward to hearing how they went in their events.
Congratulations to the Nossal Athletics team. You were outstanding in your fierce determination and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Thank you to Ms Coffa for her support of the team.
Age Group Champions 2022
On Monday 3 October, at the final whole school assembly I was delighted to present the Age Group Champions in the House Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country for 2022.
Before I list these students below, I would like to take this opportunity to commend our Nossal students on their eagerness to participate in a wide range of activities, to master new skills and the enormous House spirit and pride that is evident through this participation. The participation rates in each of these House events is outstanding. It is incredible to watch Nossal students have a go at new and unfamiliar sporting activities while be encouraged and supported by their peers. Hopefully next year we will see even more students embrace the challenge and trial something new.

Year 9 Health and Physical Education
Currently the Year 9 students are participating in a dance unit which aims to encourage complex and coordinated movements. Students have trialled a range of different genres including classic dances such as the Nutbush and Macarena and hip hop. Students are now developing their own choreography to music within small groups, encouraging group collaboration, communication and teamwork. The Physical Education team are looking forward to viewing their creativity later in the week to see what they were able to come up with.
This semester in Health Education the focus has been on Relationships and Sexual Health focussing on topics of gender identity, consent and decision making and Drug Education examining the different classes of drugs and interpreting data related to youth health.
This year all Year 9 students will have a scheduled Health exam. The purpose of this is to enable students to practise their skills in interpreting and responding to questions using different data sets and terminology that was introduced throughout the year. The exam will have a 15-minute reading time and 60 minutes of writing time to replicate formal assessment. Students will be given a range of scenarios and will apply their skills of interpreting data and considering the impact of these scenarios on the health and wellbeing of individuals.
Intermediate Girls Badminton Team finish in 3rd for the state final 2022!
On Wednesday 10 August the Intermediate Girls badminton team participated in the School Sport Victoria Badminton State Finals at MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre). The team consisted of three Year 9’s: (Vinuki Liyanaarachchi, Evelin Manoj and Mahasri Chapalamadugu) and three Year 10’s: (Shanel Dcunha, Caron Sequeira and Julianne Lorenzo) which we enjoyed because everyone on the team supported each other and it was a great team environment to be a part of.
This was an exciting and nerve-racking day for us as it was the first time Nossal High School’s Intermediate Girls’ team was participating in the State Finals. We were placed in Group B of the tournament and played against Ballarat High School, Sale College and Reservoir High School.
Thanks to our talented players we won against all of these schools (6-0, 6-0, 5-1 respectively) and automatically qualified into the semi-finals. In the semi-finals we played against the Maribyrnong College badminton sports academy team which we knew would prove to be a tough fight. We started off our first match strong with our Number 1 seed Vinuki beating her opponent 21-11. After that, we tried our best and fought hard until the very end but were defeated. This loss resulted in us finishing third in the state for Intermediate Girls.
We were very honoured to have the experience of representing Nossal in the State Finals and proud of our efforts and achievements as the Intermediate Girls Team. Thank you very much to the teachers that took us to the division and regional tournaments and for Ms. Pumphrey organising our events. We would also like to thank Ria for helping play against us in our training sessions and also to Mr. Armistead for coaching us!
