Term 4 Resumes

We hope that everyone had a restful holiday and that we are ready for another busy term. We commenced the term with a whole school assembly that recognized the work that students did during Term three. Students were recognized for their achievements in a number of extracurricular activities that they participated in during Term Three, including awards for the ICAS English competition, Junior Science Olympiad, Japanese Model UN delegates, JLTAV Speech Competition participants, Frankston Susono Friendship Association Speech Contest participants, Rotary Model UN and also the Monash Scholars. We also acknowledged the students who participated in the numerous Book week activities. It was a real celebration of achievements and awards. Congratulations to all those who were recognised during this assembly.

During Term 4 we will continue our planning for 2023 which commenced during Term 3, but we are also about the begin the important work associated with developing a new School Strategic Plan for the next four years. As we move through the process the school community will be asked to have a voice in this process. During the last Professional Learning session on Wednesday teachers commenced the process of exploring the comparative data from the last four years to establish a framework within which to evaluate our performance as a school. All within our community will have an opportunity to have input into this process.

2023 School Captains

Over the course of two weeks last term our current school captains Sunghwan Min, Prathiksha Ashok RajKumar, Alicia Varley and Hashim Navas worked with Mr Monaco and me to select the school captains and vice captains for 2023. There were a large number of students who applied for the position. The process included a written application and an interview in which the students were shortlisted to present a speech which was delivered to the school community. The topic they were asked to speak on was:

Nossal High School has a number of core values that guide the school in its development. One of these values reads, “Is respectful and fosters respectful citizenship.”  How will this value inform your leadership of the school?

Student Voice and Agency

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) is in the process of selecting their representatives at the moment. We have had a large number of students nominate to be part of the SRC. Elections for these positions will take place on Thursday 20 October.

Once the elections have taken place, planning can start for 2023.

Welcome the new Year 9s for 2023

We welcomed our new Year 9 cohort on Tuesday  11 October. Mr LaBrooy, the Director of Year 9 and 10, organised for the families to do a tour of the school which was followed by an information session.

Our current Year 9s were tasked with providing the parents with an insight into the workings of the school. The students focused on a range of topics from what it is like to be a student at Nossal to the extra curriculum activities that are offered at the school. They even offered some advice on how to have fun at school!

The solo musical performances by our Year 9 students Wilbur Machado and Lincoln Ge highlighted their talents and also the music program at our school.

Congratulations to Mr LaBrooy and all the students who supported him in the presentations on the night. It was a lovely introduction to our school, and we will continue to provide information to our families about the enrolment processes.

Spring Concert

Congratulations to all our students who performed in the 2022 Spring Concert. Students once again have worked tirelessly to during the semester to present some wonderful performances during the evening. The energy and excitement during the evening was evident in their performances. The evening included a diverse array of instrumental ensembles which once again delighted the audience of parents, teachers, and students. From the Wind Symphony’s version of K. Vogel’s “Sonoran Sunrise” to the Percussion Ensemble’ version of P.E. Neville’s “Instruments of Mass Deception” there was certainly something for everyone. Congratulation to Mrs. Budd, and the team of instrumental music teachers who enthusiastically prepare these students for this performance.

Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI)

The Department of Education and Training have recently announced a renewal of the Tutor Learning Initiative for 2023 and we look forward to continuing to work with our energetic and enthusiastic tutors Ms. Kat Webster (Literacy) and Ms. Donna Callow (Numeracy) into next year. Over the last two years, this funding has been used at Nossal High School to support a large number of students across all year levels and across a range of subjects.

Leaving Nossal?

Please let Mr. Page or one of the Assistant Principals know if for any reason your student will not be attending Nossal in 2023; there is a large waiting list for position at the school. For planning purposes, it will be useful to have this information as early as possible.

Congratulations and Farewell to our Class of 2022

We have begun to farewell our Year 12 students during the course of these two weeks. On Thursday during Nossal time, the Year 12 students were farewell by their Heads of House and their Tutorial groups. This week we will have a number of celebratory events to mark the occasion.

We congratulate the cohort on their commitment, support of one another, and their resilience throughout the last three years. We wish them all the best for their VCAA examinations, some which have already commenced for our Languages, Theatre Studies, and Music Performance/ Investigation students. Of course, they are welcome to study at school during the school day. They have been asked to sign in and sign out when they are at school.
