Attendance Expectations

Attendance Expectations:

Students are expected to attend all classes.  Classroom Teachers, Student Managers, and Sub School Leaders are responsible for tracking students' attendance and punctuality. Any student whose attendance becomes a concern will have a meeting with the Sub School Leader or Student Manager and their parents/carers.

 ABSENCES

Where a student is absent, an acceptable written explanation or a phone call from home must be provided by the parent/carer.  Unexplained absence or frequently explained absence unsupported by medical certificates is regarded as an attendance concern.

Classroom teachers are responsible for monitoring student attendance in their classes.  If there are constant absences by a student, classroom teachers are to notify the Student Managers and/or the Attendance Officer if they have a concern.

The Student Manager will monitor attendance and liaise with the Attendance Officer if concerns continue. Appropriate strategies will be put in place depending on the attendance concern.

Managing non-attendance and supporting student engagement

Where absences are of concern due to their nature or frequency, or where a student has been absent for more than five days, Macleod College will work collaboratively with parents, the student, and other professionals, where appropriate, to develop strategies to improve attendance, including:

  • establishing an Attendance Student Support Group
  • implementing a Return to School Plan
  • implementing an Individual Education Plan
  • implementing a Student Absence Learning Plan for students who will be absent for an extended period
  • arranging for assistance from relevant student Wellbeing Staff

Procedures and Consequences:

LATENESS

Every time a student is late to class they miss a learning opportunity and disrupt the flow of the lesson.

Teacher responsibility for lateness and truancy during class time:

  • Mark the roll within the first 5 minutes of class
  • Once you have marked the roll, students who enter the class after that 5 minutes need to be marked late.
  • Students who spend longer than 10 minutes out of your class without a reasonable reason or permission need to be marked as truant (partial - Minor behaviour/ full lesson is truancy - major behaviour)

General procedure for teachers and Student Managers:

  • If students are late in the morning, they must sign in at Reception
  • Teachers should welcome students into the classroom at the first suitable opportunity
  • The Classroom Teacher must update the roll on COMPASS.
  • Every Monday morning, the Student Manager will print off the unapproved late list via COMPASS.
  • Students with more than two lates in the week will receive a lunchtime detention on the Monday the list is printed.
  • Students who have three or more lates in the week will receive an after school detention on the Tuesday.
