Last week saw Marist teams have the weekend off as the AIC competition was put on hold for the EKKA break. Training has resumed this week, with Marist taking on Padua this weekend in tennis, basketball and rugby league. The hiatus for the week will present boys with a chance to freshen up and hit the gym, the training field and the match with renewed enthusiasm and vigour.
A reminder that if boys are going to miss training or a match it is important that coaches and coordinators have been notified in advance. As well as being a courtesy for them in planning, it is important as it allows to know how many are playing and who needs to be replaced.
It is important that boys honour their commitment to the sport they have chosen to play. This is about more than the team or the school, while these are important at the time, the real growth opportunity for boys is in following through on a commitment, even if the experience is not what they thought it would be. I like to consider these life skills, we all know there are things we need to do in life we would rather not. This is of course a two-way street and we as a College are always striving to be better at proving experiences that are engaging, challenging and rewarding.
What’s on at the courts?
The last week saw the reintroduction of the Marist doubles Championships to the school which has not been run since 2007. With a great number of entries which was really pleasing to see, we ran our round-robin stage on the Monday to determine our Semi-Finalists for Tuesday in the open draw.
Our first Semi-final saw a match-up of No1 seeds of Louis Morris and Blake Harrold v No2 seeds Liam Webb and Jack Thorpe. Morris and Harold winning in straight sets. The second Semi-final saw a match-up of our future stars here at the College with Henry Lambley and Hamish Davidson v Lachlan Braithwaite and Fletcher Wessling. Braithwaite and Wessling won in a 3rd set tiebreak 10-8. What a great match to watch and could have gone either way, well done both teams.
Our final and also our consolation final of Oscar White and Indy Headrick v Harry White and Harry Masel.
Congratulations To our Consolation Winners Oscar and Indy on a very well-played match against much older opponents coming away with the win and winning some nice shirts for their efforts.
The main draw started with both teams trying to get the mental edge on their opponents and some very entertaining points played. In the end, our No 1 seeds Louis and Blake ran away with the match in straight sets to become the first team to win this title for 15 years and have their names recorded in history. Congratulations to our 2022 doubles Champions of Louis Morris and Blake Harrold, and to all boys for a great tennis tournament in which the boys also shared in the $500.00 worth of trophies and prizes on offer.

The MCA Swim Club contested one of our major yearly meets over the past weekend at the Queensland State Short Course Championships. It was another successful weekend for the club and we would like to say well done to the 49 competitors who competed over the past three days. The MCA Swimming Club had some amazing swims and outstanding achievements including the following top 10 results.
Fridays results
Saturdays Results
Sundays Results
Well done to all that competed over the weekend lots of PB’s and a fantastic result for the MCA Swimming Club.
Congratulations also to Nicholas Osborn for his outstanding results over the weekend which included:
Internal Basketball Competition
With the popularity of basketball at MCA there have been an unprecedented number of boys who have missed the opportunity to play Term 3 AIC basketball. There were over 150 boys from Year 7 to Year 9 who missed out on selection.
The College would like to reintroduce an Internal Basketball Competition for those boys who have missed out, for boys in Years 7-9. The competition would be played in a gala day format over 3 weekends with teams playing 3-4 games each day. It is proposed to run this competition on 27 August, 3 September and 10 September. Games would be played 11:00am – 1:00pm, at Marist College.
At this stage, we are seeking an expression of interest from interested Year 7-9 students. It is envisaged that boys will be able to enter as a team or as an individual, and be placed into a team.
Expression of Interest Form
Marist Basketball Year 7-9 Internal Competition Expression of Interest
It is hoped that following a successful competition that the format could be increased next year.
Unfortunately, our Hockey team went down 3-2 to Kelvin Grove State College on Friday afternoon. What unfolded was a nail bitter of a game with our boys having numerous shots at goal and our own goalkeeper, Spencer Sharman, making many saves of his own. Given that many players were away due to the Ekka break, a big thank you needs to go to Lincoln Stockwell (8) who made a great addition into the side. We now play off against BSHS on Friday to determine fifth and sixth positions in the Competition.
Rugby Union
Congratulations to the following boys who have made Brisbane representative squads for the Emerging Reds competition in September.
