Earth Science Olympiad

Congratulations to Sean Roe on winning GOLD at the recent International Earth Science Olympiad.

From Sean Roe:-

Recently I competed in the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) hosted virtually by Italy. During the event we competed in many different activities over the span of a week, including a 7 hour exam, an international scientific collaboration project, and an Australian scientific investigation. I came 16th in the world for the exams, receiving a gold medal. My international team received a bronze model for our project, and the Australian team received a silver medal. This was an amazing experience, allowing me to collaborate internationally while learning more about the planet we live on.

Music News

On Saturday the 20th of August, the JMSS Stage Band participated in the 2022 Essentially Ellington Down Under festival at Melbourne Polytechnic. This festival is a fantastic cooperation between the Lincoln Centre New York, and the Jazz Music Institute from Brisbane, who bring some of New York's finest jazz musicians to Australia to host performances and workshops, and celebrate the music of Duke Ellington. This year, our students performed to a live audience, and then participated in a workshop with Vincent Gardner, one of America's finest jazz trombonists and vocalists. Well done Stage Band!

The following week, on Thursday the 25th of August, our fantastic Vocal and Piano teachers Loz Irwin-Ray and Peter Corrigan hosted a Choir and Vocal soiree evening. There were several soloists, and both the JMSS Choir and JMSS Chamber Choir performed to an enthusiastic parent and family audience. Congratulations to all involved.

Looking forward, the music department is heading towards Presentation Night 2022. We would like any JMSS student who would like to sing with their friends to sign up to the 2022 Mass Item. Sign up details are listed on the compass news feed. Singing at Presentation Night is worth 3 whole diploma points, so get in quick!

Our fantastic piano teacher Mr Peter Corrigan has been offered his dream job of in-house composer for a production studio here in Melbourne. Pete has been with the school since 2013, and is a stalwart member of the music team. Mr Corrigan has been an exemplary piano teacher for our JMSS students, and has supported hundreds of our piano students through VCE and AMEB exams over the past decade. Congratulations to Mr Corrigan for achieving his creative dreams with his new role, JMSS music will miss you!

Finally, A huge congratulations to Chaquen Beliakov Amaya, who won the Australian National Eisteddfod Piano Championship in Canberra for 18 Years and Under Romantic/Impressionist Solo.

QASMT Fair

Recently we (Alisha Aggarwal, Zarin Zoha, Dishitha Sriram, Edward Zeng, Siddharth Deshmukh and Taejus Shreekumar) had the incredible opportunity to fly out to Brisbane, Queensland and participate in the QASMT science fair.  This experience enabled us to share our scientific research projects and further explore our passion for science and investigation.

This 4-day and 3-night trip involved numerous scientific activities that included brunch with in-field scientists, visiting The University of Queensland campus, attending science workshops, participating in QASMT classes with our peer buddies and enjoying the scenic beauties of Brisbane and South Bank Reserve. All of this was accompanied by the experience of meeting other science-passionate students from both Queensland and Adelaide. One thing for sure, this is one experience that we will never forget!

We would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to Dr Denney, Mr Corkill, Ms Ryan, Dr Rossiter, Anna Zonneveld, Erika Trickett, Eli Czerniecki (JMSS Lab Technicians), Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI), Kevin Lu (ARMI), Professor Peter Currie (ARMI) and everyone else who supported us. A big thank you to QASMT for organising and planning out all the day's activities and finally another huge thank you to Dr Rossiter and Trish Grants who accompanied us and took great care of us during our stay.

Vic Variety Bash 2022

Just a short note to say thanks for those who supported us this year. It was 11 days of fun and adventure, seeing some amazing places. In total the bash started with 107 cars leaving the starting line at the Melbourne Showgrounds and Finishing in Cairns.

My car made it with only a couple minor hiccups along the way, with the last one breaking down with 40Km to go but still finished under its own power. A huge thanks to mobile workshops, who travel the route with us fixing all the cars as required. Unfortunately, not all could be repaired and didn’t make the end, but teammates squeezed into other cars to finish whilst organizing their cars to be transported back.

In total my car raised over $15,000 this year for variety and in total the entire bash crew raised over $1.9 million. This was huge success for variety. Again, I would say thank you who supported us and hope you can do the same again next year when head towards the Gold Coast. I have attached a couple photos, first of many morning briefings, few other teams, Sesame Street team out the front of Maree Hotel.
