During assembly on Friday, the Semester 1 Parliamentarians received their badges, ready to represent their year levels in the Junior School leadership program. We know they will do a great job representing their classes.
During assembly on Friday, we were privileged to hear from Alex C’s mother, Georgia, who spoke to the students about her journey as a young female barrister (former) in a male environment and how she achieved a successful career through persistence and hard work.
In Georgia’s job you need lots of experience and training to help people, who may have done wrong, to prove them guilty or innocent. She talked about the how the career she chose was dominated by older men. She was only 24 at the time when the average age was around 50 to 60. A lot has changed since then with a lot more women becoming barristers. The average age now being 30 to 40. Georgia has fought for many women trying to become criminal barristers. She is a perfect example that if you can dream you can accomplish. Rosie Mae SD and Clara B
On Thursday 23rd March, Shelford Junior School will become the home ground of the biggest group of superheros our suburb has ever seen! Please follow the Service Learning link for more details.
On Tuesday February 24, our Junior School Swim team completed at the SYDSA swimming carnival at MSAC. Students from Years 3 to 6 competed in a range of events, for all ages, against some much larger schools. Thank you to all the teachers who made it possible for us to have the opportunity to do something like this. Shelford placed second for the school population trophy and fourth overall! Well done to everyone who competed in SYSDA you all did a wonderful job. Finally, a shoutout to Abbey M who is representing Shelford at divisions in backstroke and butterfly later this week. - Roma P and Abbey M
Sarah W (pictured in blue) in Year 3 is a relative newcomer to fencing and is proving to be a superstar in this exciting sport. She recently placed second in a novice competition to secure her place as a contender of the future. We wish her every success in her fencing endeavours.
This week, the Year 2 students have read Rosie Revere, Engineer. What a fabulous story with a wonderful message! Rosie teaches us never to give up on our dreams and that the only true failure can come if you quit. We suspect that Rosie’s Great, Great Aunt Rose is based on the iconic poster from the 1940s of Rosie the Riveter. They wore the same red spotty bandana and both worked in factories building aeroplanes. After listening to the story several times, we did a directed drawing of Rosie and then donned some marvellous red spotty bandanas to partake in an afternoon of engineering with the rest of the JDC. What a wonderful afternoon we had!
This term, the Year 5 and 6 students have been learning about Natural Disasters. During this topic we did a fun and delicious science experiment to model the movement of tectonic plates using a Mars bar, this was called chocolate tectonics! The aim of the experiment was to simulate the movement of tectonic plates; convergent, divergent and transform. You're probably wondering how we did this with a Mars bar? To simulate the movement at a divergent plate boundary we gently pulled the Mars bar apart into two halves. Next, we slowly and carefully pushed them back together to simulate the movement at a convergent plate boundary. Finally, we simulated the transform boundary movement by carefully pulling one half of the Mars bar toward ourselves and the other half toward the opposing wall. Afterwards, we enjoyed eating our smooshed Mars bar, Yum! - Caitlin D and Meleri L
Hello Junior School!
We are the Junior School Blog otherwise known as the JSB for short. JSB is an easily accessible information resource that the Junior School can read for updates, such as casual clothes days, public holidays and school disco’s. This blog will be a fun way of letting you know what's happening.
There are different clubs you can join. Some of them include: Chess Club (Wednesday library) Craft Club (Tuesday lunch Year 6 only) and Chinese Club (Thursday).
You may have heard about the Junior School disco happening on 31 March from 5.30pm. The disco was organised by the wonderful parents' association. The day of the disco also happens to be Maddie D from Year 6 birthday, so don't forget to wish her a happy birthday. JR school disco tickets cost $15 for each ticket, which comes with a drink. We hope you enjoyed JSB and will read it again in the future as an information resource or just as something fun to read. If you have any questions or ideas you can email any of us.
Thank you. 😉
