Vermont Secondary College

Students in 10 Visual Arts – Materials and Processes have just completed a unit in printmaking.

As a class we explored the still life genre and created compositions derived from observations of everyday moments in our lives.

We looked for beauty in everyday objects– whether that be the dishes stacked on our kitchen benches, the objects around our bathroom sink or our cherished possessions arranged on desks at home.

We took inspiration from Margaret Preston, a renowned Australian printmaker.

With careful consideration we developed compositions with an emphasis on contrast, line and mark-making before translating these into carefully carved woodblock plates.

Students used the print press to print an edition of prints – with some having the time to explore a reduction technique that allowed them to print in two colours.

As a class we are very excited about our results!
