Vermont Secondary College

HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Friday the 17th of March we packed up the staff, the students and the canteen then made our way as a united Vermont Secondary College collective to Bill Sewart Athletics Track. It was a fantastic day with over 1100 attendees. Many students demonstrated their athletic prowess and collegiality across a variety of events in hope of gaining as many house points as possible.

The marching band made their annual appearance on the front straight which was an absolute delight for all spectators in the stands. Participation was at an absolute premium as all three houses were extremely competitive throughout the day racking up those all important house points.

Due to the mammoth amount of junior relay teams entered the 1500m events were not able to be run on the day. Students interested in running in the 1500m will have the opportunity to do so on a date to be confirmed at Ringwood Athletics Track. Stay tuned!

SENIOR GIRLS CRICKET - EMR

On Thursday 9th March the Senior Girls competed in EMR Cricket at Knox Gardens.

Our first match was up against Norwood Secondary College.

We bowled first with Annie, Sunday, Tamara, Jess, Rituja, Stella, Maddie and Jemma leading the way. Rituja took three catches and Norwood finished their 20 over innings at 6 for 114 runs.

It was then our turn to bat.

Norwood took some early wickets, however Rituja and Sunday formed a solid partnership, Rituja finishing with 52 not out and Sunday 30 not out.

The girls finished strong and made the winning runs in the very last over.

Our win against Norwood put us into the final against Balwyn High School.

We batted first with Stella and Sunday opening. Balwyn struggled with their bowling and only managed to get two wickets in the 15 over innings.

Again, Rituja and Sunday formed another great partnership and batted for 11 overs together, both finishing not out, Rituja with 42 runs and Sunday with 29. Vermont made a very impressive total of 125 runs.

We then went into bowl and did an outstanding job, with Jess, Annie, Sunday, Maddie, Jemma and Tamara taking wickets. Balwyn couldn’t keep up with the required run rate and their batting collapsed, finishing with 7 for 59.

The Vermont girls were superb, everybody contributing and playing their part.

Congratulations to Grace, Tamara, Annie, Stella, Sunday, Sophia, Maddie, Jemma, Triyana, Rituja and Jess. I wish you all the very best in the next round which will be in Shepperton on March 20th

Also, a massive thank you to our Year 9 helpers Mitch and Hamish for scoring, carrying equipment and expert coaching and advice.

Mrs Ellard.

SENIOR GIRLS CRICKET – STATE QUARTER FINALISTS

The senior girls cricket team had an early start to our long day.

Getting to school at 7:30 am to prepare for the bus ride up to Victory Park in Shepparton where we played Notre Dame College.

The team arrived in Shepparton energized for a win.

We set up the ground and dealt with the challenges of a narrow pitch and an uneven field.

We lost the toss and had to field first.

Annie opened the bowling and bowed beautifully, we then had Sunday follow who also bowled well.

We put a lot of pressure on in the field with Rituja taking a catch off Annie’s bowling. Rituja also bowled some great express pace with Jemma doing a great job keeping. Triyana, Grace and Tamara were all great out on the field stopping boundaries and putting pressure on the batters.

Kate’s bowling was also fantastic as well as Maddie and Jess’s bowling.

Our captain Stella did an amazing job bowling and setting the fields but the batters from Notre Dame found ways to sneak some good runs and nicely played shots.

Notre Dame finished 1/149.

We knew getting a win would be hard but we still gave it a crack.

Our openers Stella and Kate faced some tough bowling from Notre Dame but held their wickets for as long as they could and played some beautiful shots making 6 and 9 runs respectively. Rituja, who made 10 runs, and Sunday, who made 7, helped to bring the run rate up and also made some good calls. Jess came in making a few nice shots and made 22 runs.

Annie went out on the field and stayed out there making 15 runs and was joined by Jemma shortly who made a run before the game was then finished.

Vermont made 5/98 a great effort in the State Quarterfinals.

Well done to all the girls that played and a big thank you to Ms Malander and Mr Smyth, our brilliant coaches and great mini bus drivers.

Special mention to our Year 12's Jess, Annie, Maddie, Kate and captain Stella on playing their final cricket campaign for Vermont Secondary College.

It has been nothing short of fantastic having you involved over the years.

All the best for your future cricket endeavours.

INTERMEDIATE ROUND ROBIN

GIRLS CRICKET

On Tuesday 14th March, the intermediate girls cricket team competed in a competition with three other schools for the opportunity to move onto the next stage.

In the first game Vermont played Highvale resulting in a comfortable win. Then, Vermont went onto play the final against Mount Waverley and unfortunately lost. Overall it was a great day that everyone enjoyed.

Thanks to Mr Squire for coaching us and hopefully we can make it through next year.

BOYS/MIXED BASEBALL

On Thursday the 2nd of March, the Intermediate Baseball team competed against Highvale, Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley.  Through a great demonstration of teamwork, our baseballers won each of their 3 games.  There was some powerful hitting and aggressive baserunning on show by all team members, as well as some terrific plays it the field.

Special mentions to Harry and Liam for some great pitching, and to James for his fantastic work catching.

The best part about the day was the positive support and encouragement towards and from all team members.

Best of luck for the next round at EMR team!

GIRLS SOFTBALL

The girls softball team had a very successful day at our district level competition.

Lead by Rituja, the team played extremely well. Winning 2 out of their 3 matches and making it to regionals. Rituja hit two homeruns and Otie showed incredible competitive spirit diving to make it on base.

The team is excited to compete at regionals.

YEAR 7 ROUND ROBIN

BOYS/MIXED VOLLEYBALL

On Thursday the 9th of March, the Boys/Mixed Volleyball team went to play in the Waverley division at the  Mullum-Mullum Stadium. Both the A and B team played well, winning a number of games in the round stages. All teams made it to the finals and played their hearts out but unfortunately, we did not win and so did not make it through to the next round. Whilst every team had their up and downs, as a captain I couldn't imagine a better team to play, we showed great perseverance. We will use our experience this year to prepare us for greater success next year. Some great plays and good teamwork, well done.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

On the 9th of March, the Volleyball Girls ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams and Volleyball Boys ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams participated in the Volleyball Round Robin.

It was an extra exciting day for the Vermont Secondary students, with all the Vermont teams making the finals and both the A and B girl teams winning the finals.

All the Volleyball teams had lots of fun and displayed all the Vermont Values, Integrity, Respect and Excellence.

Great sportsman ship was also shown by all the Vermont students, whether they won or lost. Overall, the day was incredibly enjoyable and competitive, and we are pleased to announce that the Volleyball Girls ‘A’ Team has made it to Regionals.

BOYS/MIXED CRICKET

On the 9th of March, the Year 7 boys played in the cricket round-robin tournament. Our Head Coach, Mr. Duiveman, assisted by Ansh S and Lachlan H encouraged the boys to give their best. In round 1, we played Glen Waverley, who in recent years we have played and won against, however they put up a fight not seen in 10 years.

Glen Waverley won the toss and elected to bat first. Some great partnerships between Ozil and Quinn put us ahead in the game, before Archie and Hardit made some valuable runs towards the end of our innings, posting a defendable 93 runs.

In the end, however, it was just 10 runs short of where we needed to be.

Some valiant fielding and good tight bowling kept it close, but Glen Waverley held their nerve to win with 2 balls to spare.

In the second match, the Year 7 boys weren’t discouraged by the early loss.

They came out fighting in the second game, posting a monster score of 160 from 15 overs. Once again, Hardit and Archie provided runs at the end of the innings but were heavily supported by the batting efforts of Ozil and Quinn.

What was always going to be tough work for Highvale to win, Vermont showed fight and determination to show the other teams that they should be going through to the next round. With great all-around fielding and bowling, we won by 80 runs.

Overall, it was a great day for Vermont, and we hope to see the boys try out next year so we can go one step further.

Winners and through to EMR finals

BOYS/MIXED BASEBALL

We had a terrific day out at baseball on Thursday the 9th of March.

With much of the team being new to baseball, there was a huge amount of learning going on throughout the day.

We came away with a strong win against Highvale, a draw with Glen Waverley and a loss by a single run to Mount Waverley, meaning that our team came second and only just missed out on progressing to the next round.  Everyone made positive contributions to the day through their batting and base running, with a number of handy plays in the field. Special mentions to Miller for his terrific pitching, and to both Hayden and Blake for their great work as catchers.

With a little extra training over the next few years, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for these players – onwards and upwards team!

GIRLS SOFTBALL

This team had a fantastic day out!

Lead by Mithra and assistant coach Darcey, the team kept energy high across the 3 matches they played throughout the day.

They finished on top with a close game against Mount Waverley to finish us off.

Going into the third innings with equal runs, Sammi had 2 excellent tags which gave us the lead, and excellent pitching by Joy and catching by Hadassah saw us undefeated.

This relatively inexperienced team were open to feedback which helped them win across the day.

Well done, and good luck at regionals in October!

Miss Eccles

TENNIS

Well done to all the Year 7 Students who participated in the Mixed Tennis Tournament held at Notting Hill Pinewood Tennis Club on March 9. We played against Highvale SC, Glen Waverley SC, Mount Waverley SC and Notting Hill SC, entering both ‘A’ Boys’ and Girls’ teams. The skills levels of students varied, but individually and collectively the Team Spirit was high and everyone played their best.

A big thank you to our student trainers Aden and Jonathon, with Jonathan coaching and providing strategy and guidance on the day. Some matches were evenly matched ‘thrillers’. In the end, our boys’ team triumphed and will progress to the Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals later in the year.

The girls’ teams drew on match points but lost on a game countback to Mount Waverley SC. Great efforts everyone.

Well done on the way you represented VSC against other schools.

Ms Nettleship.

Intermediate Boys and Girls Tennis

Our tennis team had a great day on the 28th Feb playing at Pinewood Tennis Club.

The Girls A Team came away with a win against Mount Waverley, a draw against Glen Waverley and a loss to Highvale.

The Boys A Team was the opposite, with a remarkable win against Highvale and a loss to Mount Waverley, however the competition was fierce against Glen Waverley with an unfortunate narrow lost by 3 games.

Our Boys B Team performed exceptionally well, drawing the overall competition with Mount Waverley.

Well done to all those who participated!
