What's Happening In Grade 6

The Grade 6 students have been busy this term.  Below is a summary of the areas of learning the Grade 6 students have been working on this term.

Reading:

During Reading, the students  examined the structure of Response and Discussion Texts, aligned to their work in writing. They have studied verb types, tenses, persuasive language such as hyperbole, rhetorical questions, modality, conjunctions, and transitional phrases. In Literature, students have read and responded to a wide range of digital and printed texts including art works,  picture story books and novels. They have read informative texts from websites such as the Australian Human Rights Commission and  viewed and discussed issues from episodes of Behind The News. Reading groups and Book Clubs are well under way.  Students have enjoyed independent reading and borrowing from the school library.

Writing:

During Writing, students have been revising the structure of a response text.  Students have been learning about the language features and purpose of writing a response. The Grade 6 students wrote responses and expressed their opinions about artwork and books we have read. The students are currently exploring the structure of discussion writing and have focussed on writing strong arguments with evidence and time connectives.

Numeracy:

This term in Mathematics the Grade 6s have been developing and consolidating their knowledge of prime and composite numbers, integers and place value. Students have explored positive and negative numbers in real life situations, for example temperature. This was then followed by ordering fractions and decimals by using manipulatives and technology.  Students also investigated angles on a straight line, to a point and identified  unknown angles measuring to the correct degree, and named these types of angles.

They have defined and investigated the properties of 2D shapes.
