What's Happening In Our Classroom

Reading:

This term, the Year 5 students have been learning about Summarising and Visualising when reading Fiction and Non-fiction texts. The students are learning how to identify information that is important and information that is interesting. They have worked solidly to understand how to locate the topic, themes and main idea by using the criteria provided.  The students are learning to reflect on their knowledge of text structure and genre to produce concise summaries.

The Year 5s are currently learning to share their knowledge and justify their visualisations based on the text and modify their writing or illustration by adding detail as they acquire new information.

Writing:

The Grade 5 students have been working hard to develop their exposition writing skills this Term. We have explored persuasive language and features, with a particular focus on modality words, emotive language and providing evidence and explanation for arguments to persuade the reader.   We have worked on sentence structure and developing compound and complex sentences.   The students have also been immersing themselves in spelling investigations to learn more about letter blends and the different sounds they can make, and then categorising these words as Phonological, Visual, Morphemic or Etymological.

Numeracy:

Throughout Term One, the Grade 5 students have spent time developing their understanding of Place Value. Students have focused on numbers up to 6 digits and are working towards a better understanding of decimals. They have continued to explore two dimensional shape and have begun to use this knowledge towards understanding angles. Over recent weeks they have started expanding their knowledge of temperature.
