Numeracy@Home

Following on from the last newsletter edition, the Numeracy@Home project offers 11 creative ways to support your child.

In today's newsletter, I have included two more activities which can be adapted to suit varying capabilities of students.

Activity 2: Exploring Shapes

Associate Professor Ann Gervasoni explores how you can support your child to notice and describe the shapes of objects around you.

Shape is included in the Victorian Curriculum (from Foundation where students sort, describe and name 2D shapes and 3D objects to Year 6 where students construct simple prisms and pyramids).

The Numeracy@Home project states that 'Children learn to name, describe and organise shapes by noticing their features.' This can be supported by:

  • encouraging your child to compare shapes and objects
  • when talking about shapes and objects, using mathematical vocabulary such as 'long, short, holds more, holds less, heavy or light.'
  • Play Eye Spy using features of shapes and objects as clues

Activity 3: Where is it?

Children can explore location by using words and ideas which describe position.

Problem-solving activity

Please find attached a problem-solving activity thanks to Dr. Paul Swan.

I recommend the activity for students in Years 3-6.
