Michael Salmon visits St. Raphael's

Last week all of the students from Foundation to Year 6 had the opportunity to join in a special zoom presentation with the iconic Australian author Michael Salmon.

The 2 one-hour long sessions included an explanation of Michael's own writing and illustrating journey as well as some interactive activites.

Students enjoyed the tutorial from Michael as they drew one of Michael's most famous characters 'Bobo' the Superdog.

Michael then created amazing caricatures of some of our students as the students drew a caricature of Michael. Can you guess who drew which picture?

His message to the students was truly inspiring as he encourgaed the children to persue their dreams and never give up!

Thank you Michael for the laughs, the lessons and overall an uplifting experience!

It was really fun and engaging. Great find!

I really liked his drawing and the stories he told us about when he was a young boy.

-Rocco (Year 1/2)

I enjoyed learning about how he draws his characters. It was interesting to listen to him.

-Billy (Year 1/2)

My favourite part was when he told that story about his dog and the garage door! Oh my heck that was hilarious!

-Lucia (Year 1/2)

My favourite part was when he showed us a picture of his statue because I have taken a photo with the statue in Canberra

This week we celebrated Book Week and were fortunate to have Michael Salmon join our Zoom meeting. Michael is an author and an illustrator from Melbourne and is famous for writing many Australian stories. He is also a great cartoonist. ‘The Monster Who Ate Australia’ is one of the many books he wrote and illustrated. This book was very entertaining. I really liked the illustrations and the places that the main character ‘Burra’ visited in Australia in search of a new home. He explored many different places and many famous icons. It’s a fun book to read and a great way to learn more about our country. In the meeting, he drew many different cartoons and inspired me to be more creative when I write and illustrate.

-Justin Rametta (Year 5/6 )

For book week this week, we had the honour to listen to an Australian author and illustrator; Michael Salmon. In the zoom we learnt that all of his work is inspired by everything around him and things that are important to him in life. I enjoyed reading one of his books ‘ The Monster Who Ate Australia' because not only did it entertain me, but had a meaning behind the story. I love his illustrations as they are very unique and creative. The illustrations keep the reader entertained and engaged in the story.

What a great week we have had celebrating Book Week. Thank you to the teachers, parents and most of all the students for jumping on board with all of the activities across the week. It is certainly not like any other book week we have celebrated in the past, but it has been just as fun and enaging as ever!

Brave a tutti!
