Happy Chinese New Year!

2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. In Chinese mythology, the rabbit - the fourth of the 12 zodiac signs - stands for harmony and longevity.

In our first week back to the new school year, our students have been introduced to some Lunar New Year customs including the zodiac story of “Nian” and many students found they were born in the year of rabbit or tiger!

Each class took part in a session led by their lǎoshī 老师 (teachers) to understand the purpose of the festival and how to celebrate. Our students discovered that the New Year is all about new beginning, just as the morning is the beginning of a new day.

In Chinese culture, all celebrations focus on removing the old and welcoming in the new. New clothes are worn and cleaning takes place. The children know that red is a lucky colour in Chinese culture and red envelopes are given as gifts.

Students also engaged in numerous activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year together. Our year 7 students created Spring Festival couplets (chūn lián) to express sincere blessings and good wishes. Our year 8 students designed beautiful Chinese lanterns (dēng lóng) to bring good luck and prosperity.

May your Year of the Rabbit be full of happiness and health!  Xīn nián kuài lè! Gōng xǐ fā cái
