READING @ HOME TIPS

There is no magical formula for learning to read. Children learn in their own time according to their own pace. There is no critical age when all children should have mastered reading.

Children need ongoing quality experiences with books. Providing a regular, reading routine at home assists children in their quest for reading success.

During reading, there are many effective ways to assist children to identify unfamiliar words or correcting errors while reading. Prior to saying anything when assisting your child please allow sufficient wait time. Allow your child to look around the page for clues as too often they will appeal for help.  Rescuing won’t help!

Telling them the word does not allow them to become independent.

After waiting sufficient time, if your child is still unsure try saying:

  • Read on and collect other clues.
  • Go back to the beginning of the sentence and re-read what you read.
  • Look at the illustration and see if there are clues there.
  • What do you think would make sense here?
  • Say the first sound and look at the picture to help

If your child has had a go at an unknown word and is unsure if it is correct you can ask:

  • Does it make sense?
  • Does it sound right?
  • Does it look right?

If these prompts are not working and your child is labouring over a word and becoming frustrated,  move them on by telling them the word and continue reading. We want students to struggle a little in order for them to become independent word solvers but we also do not want reading to become a task.

It should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your child.

NUMERACY - Colleen Monaghan

Pancake Tuesday was a great day for Maths. We measured the ingredients to make pancakes, we estimated how many we could make with the mixture and then we measured them when they were made. We collected that data on each class's favourite toppings and then represented the data in a graph.

We also counted how many flips Mrs Monaghan could do without dropping them. Of course, we did eat the pancakes which was the best part.

SSV COBURG DISTRICT SUMMER SPORT RESULTS

On Friday 24 February, St Fidelis’ Year 5/6 students participated in Round 1 of the SSV Coburg District Interschool Sports Competitions. In this round, St Fidelis travelled by bus to the Australian International Academy to play matches of Softball, Basketball and Bat Tennis.

Congratulations to all our teams on displaying wonderful sporting behaviour, which included respect for our team members and the opposition, trying our best, and supporting each other through encouragement. A large number of our team members were playing these games against an opposition team from another school for the very first time, so our teams’ performances are to be commended!

Great News - Hundreds of students from Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne are exhibiting their artwork as part of the annual Creative Arts Exhibition! The exhibition, part of Catholic Education Week (March 14 - 18) is a chance for young artists to share their creativity with the world.

The Creative Arts Exhibition 2023, includes a live gallery held at the Catholic Leadership Centre in East Melbourne and a digital gallery where schools, students, families and the Catholic community can join in the celebration and witness the incredible talents of our young artists.

This year, the theme for Catholic Education Week is 'Forming lives of faith, hope and love in the light of Christ' and I have encouraged all our students, to explore, design, create and submit artworks fitting with this theme.

Archbishop Peter Comensoli hopes to see a larger selection of religious artworks in the 2023 show and I can say with great pride our students produced wonderful and beautiful art pieces and religious artworks expressing their understanding of Forming lives of faith, hope and love in the light of Christ. Usually the curators select one or two artworks from each Catholic School but once again, the curators were so impressed with our students’ art pieces I was allowed to select five artworks from St. Fidelis.  They selected many art pieces from our artists of 2022 to also be exhibited at the 2023 Catholic Education Week Art Expo.

You are welcome to visit the 2023 Catholic Education Week Art Expo. If your child’s work has been selected and their work has been exhibited at the expo, this is an amazing achievement by your child. If you have the opportunity to visit the exhibition, please take a photo with your child and art piece and email it to me joef@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.au I will like to share it with the St Fidelis Community. This is proud moment for your child, yourselves and the St Fidelis Community.
