Mathematics

It has been so wonderful to see all students engaged in hands-on Maths activities and investigations across the school that target various areas of the curriculum.

In Prep, they are focusing on numbers 1-5 and have been practising to read, write, order and make each number. They loved using Playdoh to practise forming each number correctly.

In Year 1 and 2, their focus has been statistics and they have been asking each other questions and using the data to form graphs. They loved finding out which ice cream flavour was the most popular and creating Smarties graphs based on the different colours in each packet.

In the Middle School, students have been exploring place value and the value of numbers.  They have been examining the properties of odd and even numbers and expanding, renaming and ordering numbers.  These concepts have been explored using place value games and many hands-on activities.

In the Senior School, they have been working on their number skills and have been looking at multiples, recognising number patterns, ordering numbers to tens of thousands, estimating and rounding and recognising large numbers involved in everyday life.

On Thursday the 9th of March, St James will be celebrating World Maths Day. Students will have the opportunity to complete open-ended investigations with their class and put their problem solving skills to the test!
