Hajimemashite! (Nice to meet you!)

‘YOUKOSO’ (Welcome) to the Upwey South Japanese Room!

It has been wonderful to be able to meet all the students and families in the Upwey South community these past few weeks! In the past few weeks, students have had opportunities to decorate their Japanese folder covers for the year, learn about the history of daruma dolls and their relation to goal setting, and also start to unpack some new Japanese words.

This term in Japanese lessons, students will be exploring the following topics and learning activities:

Year 2

In term 1, Year 2 students will be learning Japanese words associated with the classroom. They will learn how to say various stationary items in Japanese, and will also learn a variety of classroom instructions in Japanese through a song. They will begin tracing and copying hiragana to practice recognising the shape of the hiragana script. The students are working towards creating their own "fudebako" (pencil case) which they can use to perform a simple role play at the end of the term.

Year 3 & 4

In Year 3 and 4, students will be learning some useful self-introductory Japanese phrases and questions. The students will be exposed to various speaking, listening and writing activities and games to consolidate their knowledge in this area. They will engage in a quiz-show-style role play at the end of the term to showcase their learning.

Year 5 & 6

Year 5 and 6 students will be exploring the topic of travelling in Japan this term. They will be introduced to some popular tourist locations in Japan, and will learn how to make an inquiry about those places in Japanese. To celebrate their learning at the end of the term, students will make a travel brochure of a Japanese city of their choice, and present information about their chosen city in Japanese.
