WELCOME TO 2023
To all of our Year Five and Six parents and carers, welcome to 2023. We have had a very settled and rewarding start to the year with all grade working hard at developing routines and class expectations.
For some students this may be their last year at Upwey South Primary School, while others have just entered into the senior years. Whichever path you are on we would like to say a very warm hello, we look forward to working with you and your child.
If you have any questions throughout the year please email your classroom teacher. We will do our best to give you clear and concise communications.
INQUIRY - Health and Wellbeing
During Term One the Inquiry unit is focusing on the health and wellbeing of our students. We are building on their knowledge of what is needed for a healthy body and in supporting them to make informed decisions linked to their wellbeing.
By the end of Level 6, students investigate developmental changes and transitions. They understand the influences people and places have on personal identities. They recognise the influence of emotions on behaviours and discuss factors that influence how people interact. They describe their own and others’ contributions to health, physical activity, safety and wellbeing. They describe the key features of health-related fitness and the significance of physical activity participation to health and wellbeing. They examine how community wellbeing is supported by celebrating diversity and connecting to the natural and built environment.
Students demonstrate skills to work collaboratively and play fairly. They access and interpret health information. They explain and apply strategies to enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing at home, at school and in the community. They perform specialised movement skills and propose and combine movement concepts and strategies to achieve movement outcomes and solve movement challenges. They apply the elements of movement when composing and creating movement sequences.

SWPBL Behaviour Matrix
Building trustworthy relationships in our senior classes is an important base for developing Respect, Responsibility and Resilience among our students. Part of this process is identifying how we all want to be treated and how we will behaviour while working in our classroom environments.
While students move around the school and spend time in specialist classes, transitioning through and between buildings and playing during recess time in our beautiful outdoor areas, each space requires clear expectations.
Development of our SWPBL Behaviour Matrix takes time, with all students being given a voice and a space to share their thoughts, feelings and ideas.
In the three photos below, you will be able to read the classroom expectations of the 5/6 classes. They may be similar in ways and different in others. This is what makes our classes unique.

John Monash Science School - Primary Schools Program
On Wednesday 15th of February, 11 of the 12 selected Year Six students, participated in the first JMSS session. The sessions included: Robogals, Mini Mathematicians and Big Science Small Scientist.
The Robogals, where given the initial instructions of connecting robots to the computer, coding simple movement instructions and then playing a game of Sumo-Smackdown. Our students through smart coding instructions, won the Smackdown game!!
The Small Scientist learnt about flight and the importance of the actual design. Each group was given an egg and whole lot of money to buy materials, to design and build a craft which would protect their egg. These 'aircrafts' were dropped from the first floor. Unfortunately, Eggbert cracked upon landing.
Our Mini Mathematicians were involved in solving a number of challenging number pattern problems. This encouraged them working as a group, following coded patterns and teacher directions to solve the problem. The solved all challenges given to them.
The students had a great time participating in fun and exciting sessions. Have a look through the photos and immerse yourself in this wonderful opportunity.
