Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,

Our Year Two students have continued to settle into their classrooms and were very excited and enthusiastic about moving beyond the ‘First 20 Days’ of learning.

Reading:

In Reading, students have been focusing on the Reading Comprehension Strategy of Predicting. Students proved to be thinkers, as they were encouraged to think like a detective when making their predictions by looking for and using all the clues such as the title, the illustrations and the blurb to make a well- informed prediction. Students demonstrated their ability to think ahead and ask questions regarding the text and were able to activate their prior knowledge to make meaningful predictions.

Writing:

Our current Year Two writing focus is Procedural Writing. Students have displayed curiosity when exploring the structure of Procedural texts, including aim, materials, sequence, and illustrations, as well as looking at the features such as paragraphs, sub-headings, dot points, action verbs and simple nouns. To link to our current Unit of Inquiry (My lifestyle choices can influence my health), students have been writing their first procedure pieces on topics such as ‘How to Pack Your Lunchbox’ and ‘How to Make a Smoothie’.

Handwriting and Word Study:

Our Handwriting focus over the past few weeks has been on letter formation for letters ‘O’ and ‘D’. Along with this, students have also been practising using the dotted thirds correctly. During our Word Study lessons, students have been exploring the phonemes /ai/ and /ea/, where they have been investigating and practising to identify, read and write these sounds through a range of spelling activities such as ‘Build it’, Sort it, ‘Search for it’, and ‘Write it’.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students have been exploring Place Value and are beginning to understand how to recognise, represent and order numbers. Students have been communicators as they discuss and explore how each digit within a number holds a value depending on its position. Along with Place Value, students have also been investigating the features of 2D and 3D shapes, such as edges, vertices, and faces and have been discussing the similarities and differences between the two. Students have also proved to be risk-takers as they have begun participating in their Fluid Groups sessions for Term One.

Unit of Inquiry:

Students have displayed a fantastic positive attitude whilst exploring our first Unit of Inquiry for the year, under the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘Who we are’, and the Central Idea ‘My lifestyle choices can influence my health’. They have been exploring the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including taking care of their mind, body, and spirit, and how we can make choices to ensure we take a balanced approach throughout our daily activities. It has been great to see so many students bringing in artefacts and we look forward to seeing students continue to be so enthusiastic towards their Unit of Inquiry’s throughout the year.
