Year Seven

Science

All students have now successfully managed to obtain their Bunsen Burner Licences - Well Done! Over the last fortnight we have completed our unit on Introduction to Science in our First 20 days. Students learnt which equipment they would be using in our Chemistry unit and how to conduct themselves in a Laboratory.  We have now moved onto our Chemistry Unit and students will be looking at Mixtures and Solutions and then moving onto Separation Techniques. Make sure that you keep an eye on their Schoolbox pages so you can see what they are covering during the next few weeks.

Mathematics

Over the last two weeks, our amazing Year Seven students have developed their ability to use algorithms to compare, order, add, and subtract integers. In addition to this, students also learned about how to apply associative and commutative laws to aid mental and written computation.

Students are now practicing NAPLAN questions in our Year Seven classrooms and are working collaboratively in teams to learn problem-solving techniques and extend their learning. No doubt students are working hard to excel!

In the coming weeks, students will explore the concept of chance by investigating chance experiments and describing probability with specific vocabulary. They will also construct single step experiments to further their understanding.

English

The last couple of weeks have seen the Year Seven students working diligently through the process of building an understanding of vocabulary, language conventions, and exploring the Jacaranda English Textbook.  They are engaging in unpacking and understanding how to reflect on their own work and check their work against a rubric assisting to identify goals using this method. as well as looking at persuasive devices and how they can utilise these skills in their persuasive writing.  They are consolidating their prior knowledge on writing narratives and starting to build their confidence in planning out an engaging fictional piece using a prompt such as ones they may see in their NAPLAN test.  All these vital skills will continue to be embedded in their future education and applied across their schooling and beyond.

Spanish

During the past few weeks, the Year Seven Students have made some great achievements in their Spanish learning. The topics that we have been covering include the Spanish alphabet, classroom instructions, numbers from 0 to 30, as well as their family members. Therefore, students now can pronounce Spanish words and sentences based on the pronunciation rule, interact with their teacher in Spanish during class, and properly introduce themselves as well as their family members in Spanish. We also did our Mid-Term Spanish test in Week Six and students have demonstrated great progress. In the next following weeks, the topics we will be covering include days and months, colours and pets, nationalities, and professions to equip the students with essential knowledge needed for their final assessment task this term.

Humanities

So far in Humanities, Students have been establishing some fundamental concepts while learning about the ‘Australian Constitution and the Australian Parliament’.

We have explored Humanities as a subject by brainstorming what will be included in the curriculum, the definitions for civics and citizenship, and the concepts of morality and ethics. Furthermore, students have been learning about ‘The Australian Legal System’ and how a court works.

Health and Physical Education

The Year Seven Students have been developing skills in Athletics over the last couple of weeks. They have looked at Relay Running and Hurdle Jumping. The aim was to develop their communication and teamwork skills. We also focused on High Jump developing their ability to take off on one leg and successfully jump over the bar. All students gave it their best and were very engaged in trying to get the best possible score.

For Health, students have been developing their knowledge in Nutrition. Students have looked at Macro and Micro nutrients and how they are important for our diets. They focused on the six essential nutrients for our bodies which are Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Minerals, Vitamins, and Water.

Student Achievements

We would like to celebrate and congratulate our first Student Leader announcement for the Secondary School for 2023.

At assembly each week, the Acknowledgement of Country is read aloud. We are privileged to have this Acknowledgement shared by one of our Indigenous students in the Aboriginal dialect of her culture. Darlene Pacey has been named our 'Wominjeka', which translates to "Welcome or come with purpose". She confidently shares our Acknowledgement and we are delighted to welcome her to the Secondary Leadership team. Deadly effort Darlene.
