KINDER INCURSION: SUSTAINABILITY

By Leesa Esmore (Kinder Co-educator)

We recently had a visit from Ellie at Aquatic Achievers about sustainability.

The children were very interested in Ellie and what she did for a job. They found out not only did she know about sustainability but was a Swimming Teacher as well! The children learned about what foods were 'everyday foods' and 'sometimes foods'. They were able to see the foods and separate them into these categories. They were very clever about knowing this!

We then found out about where these foods came from and what we could make out of them. We focused on an apple which we knew was an everyday food. We learned that the apple first got picked, then went to the factory/shed to be checked and have a sticker put on it, then went to the shops where we could buy it. We also discovered what products could be made out of an apple. We thought of apple juice, and an apple bar, and that we could just eat it as well. Then we had to think about what we should do with the empty bottle, the wrapper and the core of the apple. The children had to decide which bin they each went in. After having a discussion, we worked out that the bottle could be recycled, the wrapper went in the bin and the core went in the compost bin.

We were glad we found out where the waste went, because Ellie told us that if we didn't put the waste in the right place it could end up in our waterways and hurt the animals. The children decided they didn't want that to happen because they really enjoyed swimming in clean lakes, creeks and rivers, and especially didn't want the animals to be hurt by waste.

We talked about our own waterway, our creek at the bottom of our school and how a platypus lived there. This really sent the message home that there was a place for everything and how we can help our animals too!

Don't be surprised if your children remind you of where waste goes and into which bin! Overall they all learned so much and really enjoyed the presentation, which was colourful, interactive and interesting.

Thank you so much, Ellie! We loved your visit.

MUSIC SOIREE

By Darryl Thompson (Music Coordinator)

On Tuesday evening this week, an expectant crowd gathered in the Music room to witness our first soirée for a couple of years. Students from across the school showcased their hard work in music lessons to the delight of friends and family.

Given that much instrumental tuition over the last two years has been delivered by Zoom, the students all did their teachers proud. Fears that lockdown might hamper the music program appear to be unfounded. There is one more soirée at the end of Semester 2, so keep an eye out and keep supporting these talented kids.
