‘Next stretch’ in learning

You might hear us talking a lot about the ‘next stretch’ in learning, particularly at this time of year; you may read about it in your child’s report, or you might hear it referred to during our upcoming Parent/Student/Teacher conferences.

What is the ‘next stretch’?

The ‘next stretch’ is a short-term learning goal that both student and teacher identify in collaboration. It comes about when together they notice where the current learning is and then agree about what is needed to make the learning stretch to the next level.

Stretching our thinking to the next learning level is a challenge-yes, it will be hard work! It requires an extraordinary amount of effort and dedication to achieve the ‘next stretch’, sometimes an uncomfortable journey. The right dispositions are needed to get there including, persistence, resilience, determination, patience and, the will and desire to want to achieve something great. There is little room for an ‘I give up!’ attitude while on this journey!

Next stretch goals motivate us to step out of our comfort zone and aim higher. Students must monitor and reflect on their learning journey so far before identifying their next set of challenges. High expectations are inspired through this process.

What can you do to help?

You can help your child while they are on their ‘next stretch’ journey by encouraging them to own the journey and reminding them not to give up when it feels too hard to achieve. Offering some of the following question prompts for them to consider could also help guide them through the stretch journey-

What could you do differently next time?

What do you already know how to do?

What other strategies could you try?

What other information do you need to know to help you achieve success?
