Debating

On Wednesday night, the Year 10 Heathmont College Debating Team went to Tintern Grammar to compete in the final round of the Debaters Association Victoria Competition. Our team were last minute entries into the competition, replacing another school and because of this, this was the first time they got to compete.

Our team debated the topic: ‘Crops that require substantial environmental altering should not be allowed to be grown in Australia’, and we were on the Negative Side. Evie Taylor was the first speaker, Sofia Howie was the second speaker and Stephanie Morgans was the third speaker. Darcy Cook, Anthony Westerveld and Maddison Butler assisted in researching the topic and drafting the speeches.

After an intense and passionate debate, we unfortunately lost by a single point against Nunawading Christian College. However, our second speaker, Sofia Howie, was awarded best speaker of the night! A big congratulations to everyone in the team! A lot of research and practise went into this debate, and considering this was our first time debating formally, and the other teams had already competed in five rounds – we did exceptionally!

Debating Club runs on Tuesday Lunchtime in C8. Please speak to Miss Brew or Miss Allen if you are interested in joining one of our year level teams.
