In the last month of this term, the students have taken their taste buds to China! For this menu the students created Chinese vegetable dumplings, cabbage and coriander salad and mandarin muffins.

The year 5 and 6 students used the Habit of Mind of Striving for Accuracy, after being given a specific amount of time to first prepare, then cook and finally to serve.

The hero vegetable used in this menu was pak choy. With the absence of regular sunshine, we have had little success growing our silverbeet and lettuces but have managed to grow a lovely crop of this popular Asian green which we included as the filling in our delicious dumplings.

This term our year 3 students worked hard to earn their knife/tool licences and to create their first dish.

We made two different muffins using seasonal fruit. First, we made apple, sultana and cinnamon muffins, then pear crumble muffins. Our students were able to experience many different techniques like grating, dicing, measuring and mixing/combining to create a tasty treat using fresh seasonal produce. They responded with wonderment and awe when tasting their own creation and were able to describe the different flavours within the muffins.

During these lessons we talked about the importance of practising hygiene in the kitchen, how to wash and dry dishes, putting things away in the correct places and using our table manners during sharing time. The year 3 students will return to kitchen/garden in term 4, when we will begin creating some more challenging dishes using some new seasonal produce.

For those students wanting to re-create these dishes at home, all of our recipes can be found on The Kingswood Learning Hub.

Wishing our students and families a fun and restful school holidays,

Stay safe and happy cooking!
