From the Head of Sport

The long weekend brings a weekend off for all our ISA teams. Please ensure that you are available for 18th June, which will be our last games for this Term. Games in Term 3 restart the first weekend back so please ensure that you attend your training in Week 1 in preparation for this.

Please remember that in Term 3 we only have three rounds before the Semi-Finals so it is important to maintain your fitness levels over the holidays.

Athletics Carnival

The BMGS Athletics Carnival will be held at Glenbrook Oval on 16th June. As with the Swimming Carnival, students will be required to make their own way to Glenbrook. The BMGS Parents' and Friends' Association will be running a fundraiser on the day so they will have lunch, drinks and snacks available throughout the day.

Orienteering – report from Mrs Kate Klein

We set up on Coorah lawn this week, and visiting families who were collecting their kids from chess (from both BMGS and from other schools) were able to witness the activity and enthusiasm of our students engaging with the training, starting and finishing their courses and participating in the high-energy two person mass-start relays which the participating kids absolutely loved. It looked fantastic!

Where to next?

It is time for student to register interest in participating in the Sydney West Orienteering Champs to be held on 12th August for years 7-12.   Any students who wish to be entered into this competition need to email Mrs Harris on mharris@bmgs.nsw.edu.au by the 17th June.

Any students wanting even more can join an Orienteering club and participate in the calendar of events that occur throughout the year (see Eventor details here), including a 5-day Carnival held in Lithgow in December, 2022; perfect for new Orienteers!

Thank you

A special thank you is extended to Mark and Vanessa Freeman for getting Orienteering off the ground at BMGS.

Match Reports - Saturday, 4th June

Girls' Football

BMGS XI Girls defeated Redlands, 2-1

Last Saturday the First Girls came up against to Redlands for what we knew could be a tough match. Needing a win to hold our place on the ladder, we took the field with a full team for the first time this season. The first half displayed a lot of back and forth between BMGS and Redlands. We had some attempts on goal but either we had too little or too much power, so we didn't score in the first half. We came back in the second half wanting to score and take the lead. Thankfully we managed to dominate the play and allow for Darcy and Sophie to score two beautiful goals. With an unlucky goal being scored by Redlands within the last few moments, we walked away with the win, 2-1. Well played Girls!

Junior Girls defeated St Paul's Grammar School, 5-0

The Junior girls faced an understrength St Paul's Grammar team, with the opposition only having nine players available. To even the match, we agreed to field only ten players at a time, however, this left us with a full bench of five subs to bring fresh legs into the game whenever needed. Our girls dominated the game in an impressive display, with Ashley scoring a goal early in the first half. Goals followed from Marley and Charlie, with Charlie scoring a hattrick. Once again, I congratulate our defensive line for keeping the ball in our attacking half through some great tackling and intercepts. Congratulations, girls, on a comprehensive win!

BMGS 13s drew with Central Coast Grammar, 3-3

This weekend the 13s played an away game at Central Coast Grammar. We started the game with only eight players, as several of the boys were energetic enough to play up with the 15s, whose game overlapped with ours slightly. As a result we conceded some early goals but, once reinforcements arrived, the team fought back hard and were able to create a lot of chances and convert some of them. It was the first time we have been behind this season, with the boys finding an extra gear, especially Luke in goals who kept the opposition from scoring any more goals while our forwards reduced the deficit.

Mr Sam Colbourn, Coach

BMGS v Central Coast Grammar School

Severely undermanned, our 15s had their work cut out for them from the kick off. A number of 13s were happy to fill in the spaces on the field for at least the first half, but it was still difficult to defend the onslaught of attack from CCGS. Some commendable performances in the backline helped to keep a number of goals out, but it was not enough to defeat the opposition. At half time, the team was down to seven players, and a few BMGS Second XI players offered to step in so the game could still go ahead. Thank you to all 15s players and substitutes who brought such a great attitude and energy to the pitch for this game.

BMGS Second XI were defeated by Central Coast Grammar School

The Seconds XI's game against CCGS presented serious challenges from the get go. With a few key players missing, Cooper Mackie and James Masselos filled in from the 15s. Xavier Busch and Jett Fendall also agreed to back up from First grade to complete the eleven (and allow a single substitute). The CCGS team also filled their ranks with a few members of their firsts squad. Having watched the Firsts fixture at 9:00am, we felt confident that we could challenge the opposition, however, it quickly became evident that their attacking style of play was going to create problems, despite our preparations. Our back line worked hard to chase down the ball on countless attacking runs, but were unable to stop all of them. Bill Klein, goalkeeper, managed to stop a lot of these, thankfully. I think CCGS realised that Bill was going to be a challenge to beat, but our keeper kept fighting. The Second XI players made a commendable effort to maintain positive and constructive communication, playing a fair game and working tirelessly to keep their heads up in spite of a score line that did not land in their favour. Great work, team!

BMGS First XI drew with Central Coast Grammar School, 2-2

The boys took the long journey to the Central Coast on Saturday for a clash against Central Coast Grammar.   Having not lost a game yet, the BMGS boys knew this one would be a tough game. The first half kick off saw both teams start out hard, with a lot of chances for both teams. Our first chance came from Luka Donnelly who was extremely unlucky not to score with a shot that beat the keeper but unfortunately struck the post. Not long after our first chance, Isaac Nicholls and Luka strung a set of passes together that gave the perfect through ball for Jett Fendall and he was through on goal. A nasty tackle on Jett saw BMGS awarded a penalty and it was Jett himself who stepped up to take the shot. Jett rifled the ball into the back of the net, opening the scoring. BMGS were up 1 nil.   With around ten minutes to go, Central Coast were fighting back and after two scrambles at the back scored two lucky goals before the end of the half. BMGS finished the first half 2-1 down and at the half time talk they knew they had to lift to bring this game back into their hands. With the second half kick off, BMGS came out stronger and controlled the game a lot better than in the first half. With a couple of changes in positions BMGS was able to match the more attacking style of play that the Central Coast team was displaying. Trin Camilleri and Will Zakis were constantly shutting down the wingers, with Wyatt and Xavier regaining position and getting up into the midfield. Hugh McNair and Max Anicic linked up well at the top of the park, with Isaac and Luka holding strong in the middle, allowing for Jaxon Fraser to dominate his wing. Will Groenewegen filled in the gaps and, although being followed almost every time he got the ball, he kept fighting on. After a tougher half, but a much more dominant half from BMGS, we were still down 2-1 with only ten mins to go. But BMGS pushed on and found the light. After a shot that confused the keeper, the ball found its way back to Angus Herron, who dribbled around the Central Coast keeper and smashed home our much deserved equaliser. The game finished in a 2-2 Draw on the final whistle. A tough match for both sides but it was clear that BMGS were the better team on the day. The draw has kept our undefeated run alive and the boys know what they must do to keep themselves as the top team in the comp.  Man of the Match goes to Jett for his incredible game.  Honourable mentions to Jaxon, Zakis and Angus.  Well done lads! We keep moving forward!

BMGS First VII were defeated by St. Paul's Grammar, 48-44

This was another thrilling game against St Paul's Grammar School, resulting in a close loss. Hopefully this result will be turned around when we meet them in the finals. Superb defence from Eliza and Ellen has become a hallmark of our team and this week was no exception. Alana played her best quarter of the season. Wonderful circle attacking/shooting work from Brynn, Olivia and Zoe kept us in touch till the end, but too many turnovers cost us the game.

BMGS Second VII were defeated by St. Paul's Grammar School

Sickness once again decimated our ranks. Our six players were no match for the top of the table St Paul's with seven. Beautiful defence as always from Kate and Sam was the highlight of the match. Belinda made sharp leads and was always available to get the ball. Josie used her athleticism, Bridie used her smart court sense, and India worked tirelessly in attack, but we were outclassed on the day.

BMGS Junior 3B were defeated by St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 26-17

Another strong game from our Junior B team. Despite the score not going our way, they perservered and managed to get 17 points on the board.

BMGS Junior 4C were defeated by St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 32-11

The Junior C team played exceptionally well against SACS, despite being down a few players. Celeste, Marnie and Josie showcased their defence skills and managed to intercept multiple balls. Rose N was a star in the circle with her shooting game, whilst Meggie and Rose B worked tirelessly mid-court.

BMGS Junior 5 E were defeated by St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 34-9

These girls played one of their best games and are continuously improving their netball skills. Well done!

Girls' Hockey

BMGS 1st XI defeated Oakhill College, 4-0 (match played 4/5/22)

This game was the girls' best one yet, coming away with a 4-0 win against Oakhill! Even though we were one players short, we put the pressure on right from hit off, with Meg scoring a great tap in goal in the first half. In the second half, our short corners payed off with a fantastic goal from Lily. We continued to tire out the other team and scored two more goals. Special shoutout to Belle for her constant encouragement of all her team mates. Well done, girls; I am looking forward to next game!

Katerina Reynolds (Captain)

BMGS 2nd XI were defeated by Redland, 7-0 (match played 4/5/22)

BMGS hockey girls had a challenging game, losing 7-0  against one of Redlands very skilled teams. We were missing a few players resulting in everyone having to play the full game and being a player short on the field. However despite these challenges and the end score, all the girls played very well and should be very proud of themselves. We learnt a lot from the match such as optimal positioning on the field and marking a player at all times, which will allow us to drive the ball away from the opposition, up the field to score in future games. Our team will be able to reflect on this game and develop our skills further at training on Thursday.

Heidi Kingston (Captain)

BMGS Juniors were defeated by Chevalier, 5-0 (match played 4/5/22)

The girls travelled played a very strong Chevalier team, who is currently topping our Division D table. Despite the strong opposition, our girls fought valiantly, chasing every ball down and defending with all of their might. In the first half we had four goals scored against us, with crosses knocked into our goal by the Chevalier wing. However, in the second half of the game, we came out fighting and closed down the scoring opportunities, only conceding 1 goal. We also won several attacking short corners and had a shot at their goal in this half. Although a 5-0 loss, the girls did BMGS proud in the way they played the game, never giving up. Special mention to Lucy Hargraves, you played exceptionally well in goal keeper, deflecting a multitude of goals, even though it was her first time in the kit.

Mrs Rachel Hyslop, Coach

BMGS Second XI were defeated by St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 3-0 (match played 28/4/22)

Arriving early to a very cold morning with a few of our players away made us initially doubtful but in the spirit of BMGS sport we rallied our troops, pulled up our socks and went out there and gave it our all. We even borrowed some of the junior team for some much appreciated support. As expected, we started off a little rocky with the other team scoring against us in the first ten minutes… multiple times. But we bounced back and with Sierra, Ivy and Natalie running the whole game to keep the ball away from the goal and Clem and Lola smacking it halfway up the field every time the other team thought they had it and Elodie, our goalie who has never played goalie before but stopped just about every shot they took, the game began to look up. Not to mention Ana, Audrey, Angela, and Evie who were absolutely crushing it in the middle and in attack and especially in the short corners. As the game drew to a close and the sun was beating down, we knew we weren’t going to come out on top, but not one of us ever stopped giving it our all and for that I am very proud. Although we lost 3-0, it was a smashing game, the ball hit our feet more times than I could count but luckily, we played well and all had fun!
