Year 7 Technology

In Mr O'Keeffe's Technology class we have been raising chickens. To start off with they were just eggs, they were in the incubator for 21 days, and then they all started to hatch!

They were so cute and fluffy, we picked them up and named them all. When they were first hatched they lived in the hatch box; when they got bigger we put them in a hand-made brooding box with a heat plate that was kept inside the classroom.

Finally, the chickens were big enough to put them outside in a proper, secure coop.  Some of the different types of chickens are:

  • Belgium d'uccle
  • Plymouth Rock
  • Silver Laced Wyandotte
  • Bantam Pencilled Wyandotte
  • Pekin
  • Hamburg
  • Araucana

We have now sold all the chicks to their lovely owners, some of them to students and parents and others to family members. The chicks are now living their best lives around the Blue Mountains and as far away as the Central Coast.

We hope that the next group of Year 7s in Semester 2 enjoy raising chicks as much as we did!

Also, we have raised some more flower and vegetable seedlings.  If you are interested in buying some seedlings, please email: bokeeffe@bmgs.nsw.edu.au
