Joseph is bringing his Technicolour Dreamcoat to Grammar!

Throughout this semester, students from both the Wentworth Falls and Springwood Junior Schools have been hard at work preparing for our 2022 musical extravaganza, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The musical relates the story of Joseph (son of Jacob), his 11 brothers, and his coat of many colours. Based on the Bible’s book of Genesis, and originating from a cantata written for a school choir, Joseph is a much-loved family classic. Joseph features iconic musical theatre and pop classics including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door To Me and Go Go Joseph.

Every Junior School class will feature throughout the musical in a variety of ways. Early Learning will appear as the traditional children’s choir, hearing the story as told by our three narrators, Pop Diva, Rock Star and Jazz Queen. Stage 2 will dance up a storm in the country inspired One More Angel In Heaven; while Stage 3 will take us back to the age of Disco in Go, Go, Go Joseph. Students have worked on these pieces in their music lessons with Mrs Lewis and during whole school rehearsals with Mr Forbes during the week. Pre-K have even taken to rehearsing when Mr Forbes isn’t there, via YouTube videos of Mr Forbes performing the choreography.

Students from throughout Stage 2 and 3 make up the featured ensemble, who take on the roles of Ishmaelites, soldiers, Egyptians, the stars and even stalks of corn!

The cast also features breakout performances from many Stage 3 students taking on the roles of Joseph, Pharaoh, Potiphar, Mrs Potiphar, the eleven brothers and more. These students have worked tirelessly on weekends with Mr Forbes and Mrs Cooney to ensure their roles are fully realised on stage. The extra challenge of Joseph is that it is a sung through musical with no dialogue. Learning the hour and a half of music has been challenging but also so much fun for all the students.

In addition to singing and dancing rehearsals, the Stage 3 Firetails have designed both the set and costumes for the musical.

The set at first glance appears as a large scale desert background, but revolves to reveal different settings from throughout the story. The class divided into smaller groups to design and paint the required backdrops, putting their own unique flair into each one.

Students also designed their costumes, learning how to measure themselves for their costume, construct and cut out patterns, estimate the amount of fabric required, sew on the sewing machine, measure elastic and accessorise their costume. This process was a huge undertaking, but so many of the students had a wonderful time and even created tutus for the girls in Stage 2 to wear in the corn dream sequence.

We are so thrilled that the show is ready to wow audiences next week, with four opportunities available for the Blue Mountains community to see the show.

Tickets are available from the trybooking website for $10 Adults and $5 Children. The performance will take place in Cuff Hall from Thursday, 16th June 2022 – Saturday, 18th June 2022.
