Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge
Yes – it’s that time of the year again! We are busy entering all the Junior School students into the website and parents of children in Prep to Year 5 will shortly receive a letter with the login details. Senior School students in Year 6 will all be added too. From Year 7 to Year 10 we will add any student who requests us to sign them up. A parental authorisation is required for successful challengers to have their name published on the website’s Honour Roll. The appropriate letter for this will also be sent home shortly.
Reading to and with your children and encouraging them to read widely is the best preparation for a well-rounded life and strong academic results at the end of Year 12 and beyond. Einstein said that reading fairy stories to your children will improve their intelligence, and to make them really intelligent you should read them lots of fairy stories! It’s possibly not quite that simple but the evidence of a link between readers and high achievement is well documented.
Reading Bags
We are in the process of setting up family reading bags as a trial of a program that has been very successful in other schools. If you would like to participate in the trial please let me know: msimkin@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au. The bags will be sent home weekly and contain the equivalent of a book a day for Lower Primary, and for older students there will a range of sharable reading and age appropriate novels from different authors.
Once the program has been tested we will make any necessary adjustments or improvements and offer it to any interested family from either site.
There will be 25 bags available for the trial and we will be targeting Junior Campus students as our testers.
Books will be lent to the oldest child and lost or damaged titles will be charged to accounts in the rare event that purchasing a replacement copy will be necessary.
Mrs Smith's Holiday
Our Library assistant, Mrs Sue Smith, is taking a rare break to indulge in a holiday gifted to her by one of her children. We wish her all the very best for a safe and relaxing journey to places she has not visited before.
Best wishes to every member of our College community for a productive and book filled March!
