Laidlaw House Community Service Involvement 2018

The College has challenged each of the Houses to adopt a cause in which the students can involve themselves in meaningful community service. The goal is that they learn from their involvement and see how their contributions of time and service can make a real difference to others. The greatest desire is for students to have a global, as well as a local understanding of the challenges facing people less privileged than ourselves. Laidlaw has been very fortunate to be able to develop a relationship with the Hamilton and District Rural Australians for Refugees (H&D RAR).

The first of the events that Laidlaw House has been challenged to do is run H&D RAR’s major fundraiser for the year, their film night, screening the film Hope Road as described below. Funds raised at the event, helps the H&D RAR provide scholarships for several former refugee students to study at Federation University. They have also used funds for other shorter term responses to the needs of refugees in asylum such as providing phone cards and basic needs.  H&D RAR has played a major role in supporting former refugee families who have moved into the Hamilton District as a part of an initiative ran by the Southern Grampians Shire. Three families have made the move and we hope others may find opportunities to follow. Once the film night is over, it is hoped that students may but able to find ways to work with these families. Some suggested ways they could do this are offering to read with and to the children, help to complete homework and even tutor the children. Perhaps students may see themselves as baby sitters or coaches in a sport. We hope the students of Laidlaw House can use their imagination to find ways to contribute to the lives of refugee families both here in Hamilton and beyond.
