Teaching's a Job In a Class of Its Own

In a recent ‘Sunday Age’, teacher and freelance writer Nicola Philp wrote a great opinion piece on the privileges of being a teacher.  She made the following observations.

‘In our P-12 school, we have the unique experience of watching students over a long time, finding their passions and forging pathways.  In staff rooms we laugh over comments and events and worry about others, it’s a job that never stops.’

‘As a small school we become family.  In a world where fragmentation and isolation are becoming the norm, it feels like a safe harbour harking from the past, where true community still exists.’

‘Teaching may not be the highest paid job, but the payment in intrinsic satisfaction and personal relationships is higher than any other job, not even parenting which is often too emotionally fraught.’

‘Working with young people most definitely keeps you young and also gives you a daily dose of reality - all ages are both refreshingly honest in their feedback.’

2020 School Captaincy Interviews

On Tuesday morning, Mrs Bernadette Milich, Rev. Angie Griffin and I interviewed 11 prospective Junior School captains.  The Year Five students were invited to apply for one of two 2020 Junior School Captain’s positions via a letter of application.  All those who submitted a letter were then interviewed.  We were impressed with the presentation of the students and depth of their responses to our questions.  It was interesting to note that 3 of the 11 students were new to College this year.  This reaffirmed to us that the Junior School is a welcoming environment and students quickly settle and become comfortable with their new surroundings.  The 2020 Junior School Captains will be announced on Speech Day, Friday November 6th.

Year Six Assembly

On Monday the Year Six classes combined to present their final Junior School Assembly.  It was a trip through time with Jake Butcher playing the part of a grandparent reminiscing about his school days, from ELC to Year 6.  Memorable events in each year of schooling at Myrniong were represented by a short play.  The students finished with their interpretation of Green Day’s ‘Time of Your Life’.  Well done students and teachers Miss Ross and Mr Palmer.

New Student Diaries

In 2020, the Junior School will trial a new diary sourced through ‘The Learning Curve’.  In the front of the diaries will be 10 pages of Junior School content.  This will include important term dates, lists of teaching staff, our College Sporting Code of Conduct, important contacts and attendance information.  The diaries will also include wellbeing activities focused on character strengths, growth mindset, mindful colouring and weekly wellbeing tips.

Berry House Christmas Hamper

As we come towards the end of another busy year, we start to think about Christmas and what a special time it is for us, spending time with our families and sharing in celebrations full of fabulous food and all things festive. We’d like to spare a thought for those in our community who are less fortunate than us and may not be able to share a meal.

For this reason, every year we ask families to bring in some items for our Christmas hamper that will be donated to the Uniting Church to help spread a bit of Christmas cheer to families in need. So, when you are next doing your shopping consider putting in something extra that will help to put a smile on someone’s face this Christmas.

This year, Berry House decided to collect the items in a slightly different way. In each classroom, you will find a festively covered box awaiting your grateful donations. The aim will be to see which class can fill their box. We know we all like a bit of competition. But in all seriousness, we would love for you to get involved and help us give back to our community. Some ideas are a Christmas pudding, fruit mince pies, shortbread. We encourage you not to just raid the cupboard at home but to think of something you enjoy at Christmas that another family may not be able to provide.

Good luck and let’s fill those hampers to the brim!
