Term 4 Electives

What's been happening?

Students are enjoying another term of new and interesting electives, as well as some old favourites!

MURAL MAKING   This is part of a wider school initiative to turn the alleyway between the Science Lab and The Blackbox into an inspiring 'Melbourne laneway'. This elective has involved students creating ideas then painting their designs together as a team, under the guidance of Michael Hawkins.

OIL PAINTING LIKE THE MASTERS   Penelope Long is a visiting artist with over twenty years' experience. Penelope is teaching the students how to mix colour, apply paint and compose a picture. They have also been looking at the old masters and contemporary painters and using their own ideas and surrounds for inspiration.

VIVA FITNESS   This term, led by Karoline Kuti, students of all year levels once again are experiencing a variety of activities designed to keep them fit and healthy.

MORE RUSSIAN   This elective has been for new and returning students obsessed with ‘deciphering’ Russia, together with Chris Dite.  Word is, they have been designing a film!

SKATEBOARDING   The guys from Junction Skate have shown students that it's not only about having fun but how to keep fit, do some tricks and stay safe on wheels this summer.

CREATING AN LCD-BASED GAME   Karl von Moller returned again this term to take students on an intermediate programming journey to explore Arduino’s core by using libraries to extend what Arduino is capable of and building the algorithm for a fun 'Space Invaders' style game, taking their skills to the next level.

BOOK CLUB   Students are enjoying listening to some new books, and some old favourites, with Deb Heyes (for some it harks back to their days of separates at Arlington).

THEATRESPORTS   Always popular, students learn the art of improvisation with Adam Simon.

PHILOSOPHY   Eliana Horn is taking this popular elective. Did you know that you can put the prefix ‘the philosophy of’ in front of any topic and BAM! you've created a whole new area of philosophy?

CAREERS   This elective runs across two terms for all our Year 10 students and this term was taken by Bronte Howell. Students get involved in a number of activities from exploring all the resources on offer on our dedicated Careers website. We also had guest speakers Alex Cork from Crimson Education (who can guide and assist students with all there is to know about applying to international universities) and coach James Lynch from Interview Skills who gave an in-depth presentation and workshop about all there is to know about nailing THAT interview.

TENNIS   Another favourite as students learn the skills and enjoy the game with coach Bill Madafferi at the MCC Sports Club (next to Arlington).
