From the Senior Sports Master

Congratulations once again to the winning teams of our Summer Sports. Certificates were presented to our winning Basketball and Second XI Cricket teams at our Sports Assembly last Friday, where the teams were congratulated by the College.

We also welcomed our new House Vice Captains for Semester 1 into their positions at last Friday's Assembly.  Congratulations to these students.

Mr Matt Stearn - Senior Sports Master

SPX Tennis Championships

Last weekend saw the SPX Tennis Championships, an internal tournament for our tennis players. The day was a warm one, which proved challenging to some players as the courts heated up, just as the level of competition did. We saw some impressive game play in the round-robin style competition with some very close and exciting games.

Ultimately, the following boys saw victory:

Group 1 – Victor Lahoud

Group 2 – Tom Ryan

Group 3 – Sean Balaji

Group 4 – Oliver Rix

Group 5 – William Scaiff

Group 6 – Antony Autore

Group 7 – Oliver Johnson

Group 8 – Layton Chan

Group 9 – Spencer Anderson

Group 10 – William Fiore

Thank you to Mrs Bamber, Ms Black and Ms Colefax for helping the make the day such a success.

Ms Amanda O'Brien - ISA Tennis Convenor

Cross Country

A group of dedicated Senior and Junior School students have been training diligently under the coaching of Izzy and the leadership of Matt North (Yr 12) in preparation for their respective representative Carnivals. We are seeing some cracking PB’s as the fitness work pays off.

IPSHA (Yrs 5-6) is now on Wednesday 21 April

ISA (Yrs 7-12) – Wednesday 26 May

The holiday period could see the undoing of a lot of hard work. However, Izzy has provided a training program for athletes, differentiated for Snr/Jnr level. Hard-copies have been distributed and a copy can be found here.

I suggest training with a buddy on some days would be a great option and increase motivation.

Two-warm up events that take place these holidays are listed below. Students can register at their own discretion. Details for the latter is in this Woodchatta.

Sun 4 April                              Running Stars Curl Curl Series, Curl Curl (2.5k, 5k)

Sun 18 April                            Lindfield Fun Run, Roseville (5k)

In Term 2 training will continue on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. However, we will now commence at 7.15 am as we ramp up towards the pointy end of the season. Students who cannot make the early start should still arrive when they can and join in.

Have a great Easter break, characterised by at least as many miles as chocolate eggs!

Mr Greg  Virgona - Cross Country Convenor

CSDA Debating Competition and SDN Debating Competition

CSDA Debating Competition

There is no training this week for debating.  Last Friday all of our senior debaters were given a shortened CSDA Adjudicator induction. This means that our seniors can adjudicate all of our ‘inhouse’ debates next term.  We have so many Year 11 and Year 12 debaters and we want to make sure that everyone has a debate each Friday evening which means that we will run a SPX Only Competition and our seniors will adjudicate these ‘inhouse’ debates. Our training runs from Round 1, Week 1 next term (see the dates below) with training commencing at 3.15 pm - 5.00 pm every Friday.

The CSDA Competition commences in Term 2. See the following dates.

Coaches for 2021 are:

Year 7   Joshua Foley (ex SPX student debater who coached in 2020)

Year 8   Ms Leigha Zervakos

Year 9   Leo Lovesy (ex SPX student debater who coached in 2020)

Year 10  Mr Justin Donnelly

Year 11  Luke McManus (ex SPX student debater 1st year coaching)

Year 12  Mr Ryan Balboa

We are so lucky to have ex-students to work as coaches as their experience as debaters is still fresh and the younger students really enjoy contact with our ex-debating “champions”. All of our coaches are also adjudicators which means that their feedback to their teams is timely and specific.

The fee for the CSDA extra-curricular activity is $150.00 which will be included in your Term Two school fees. We keep our fees as low as possible and have funding from the St Pius X College P & F to subsidise the costs of running debating at SPX.
