Winter Uniform and Presentation

Our young men return in Term 2 in full Winter Uniform. This includes the College blazer, shirt and tie, long grey pants with black belt and the College grey jumper for extra warmth, along with black or grey socks and black leather school shoes.

The College Uniform also includes the College Backpack.

As the end of Term 1 approaches, many of our young men will need a haircut before returning in Term 2. In obtaining haircuts for your son, it must be an even grade and of a style and length unlikely to cause comment. Shaved sides with longer fringes hanging over the top and exaggerated parts are not permissible. The hair must not be any shorter than a “3 blade”. Hair must be clean, tidy, gel-less and of natural colour.

These regulations are standard for all, ensuring your son’s own good self-discipline as we join as one St Pius X community.

The College Rain Jacket can be purchased from the Uniform Shop. It is only to be worn on wet days and will easily fit over our boys' blazers in winter. It is not an alternative to the school jumper or blazer. It can be worn as part of the PE/Sports Uniform. Matching track suit pants to this jacket will be on sale soon for the College Uniform Shop. It is the only rain jacket to be worn on wet days. No other type of rain jacket is permitted.

As the mornings begin to cool our young men have been reminded they must only wear the correct College Uniform which includes the grey College jumper. This jumper can be purchased from the Uniform Shop with second hand jumpers also available at very reasonable prices. Hoodies of any types, including the College Sports Hoodies, are never to be worn as part of our College Uniform.

Thank you for reminding your son on leaving home in the mornings of these routine Uniform, Presentation and Hair regulations. We are very proud of our young men and certainly want them to feel the same pride in representing themselves, their family and their College.

Science Club

After missing Science Club last fortnight due to a WHS audit... we finally made our long-awaited DIY Chemical Gardens. Students placed some different coloured salt crystals into a diluted solution of sodium silicate (water glass). Before our eyes, the crystals started to grow and by the end of lunch had already sprouted into a mini chemical garden. We left the gardens to continue growing over time and you can see in some of the photos that they have formed some really interesting plant-like structures. The chemistry behind the phenomenon is quite complex and involves transitions metal silicates, double displacement reactions, semi-permeable membranes, osmotic effects and crystallisation. As our numbers were a bit smaller this week, we have decided to repeat this experiment for next Science Club too (Day 4, Week 1- Term 2). Have a look at the before and after photos of the gardens!

Are you wondering what to read these holidays?  Books from the Shortlists!!

Featured in library classes this week is the strategy to choose books from the Shortlists of Australia’s notable literary awards, including: NSW Premier’s awards Stella Prize, Indie awards Children’s Book Council Australia.

The Shortlisted books have been published in the last year and identified by panels of critics for their literary merit. The Shortlists offer all of us a shortcut to the best in Australian literature. Featured below, is the shortlist for the Ethel Turner Prize for Young People’s Literature (NSW Premier’s Awards).

You can read more details about these books on our library catalogue and with availability in eBook format students can enjoy reading a five-star book at any time over the holidays.
