Year 12 Pastoral Guardian

Year 12 students have embraced the true spirit of the College in their dedicated participation in spiritual, academic, sporting, and cultural pursuits.  Living the Gospel values of trust, joy, respect, and service, our Seniors found ways this term to care for one another.

What's Going On?

Classroom

Year 12 Food and Nutrition students are currently working on their IA3 project folio, developing a food formulation or re-formulation product for Lite n' Easy and a nutrition consumer market of their choice (vegetarian, vegan, coeliac, or health-focused).  The class produced and trialed a range of high-quality food products.  I was fortunate enough to participate in the sensory profiling of their product to assist in their data collation and recommendations for improvement.  There will be more trialing next week, and Mrs Popplewell and I look forward to seeing their final products and accompanying folios. Keep up the fantastic work, girls.

Personal Development

Our aim at Mount Alvernia is to help young women become independent, resilient, and capable members of our community.  However, parents and caregivers play an even more important role in helping teenagers develop skills and knowledge to succeed in adulthood.  I invite you to start a conversation with your daughter about what she is learning in Personal Development this term, or a global issue you believe is relevant to your daughter's life at this moment in time.  Our goal in Personal Development is to empower your daughter to understand the importance of relationships, intimacy within these, and the awkwardness, discomfort and wrongdoing in relationships.  The program included consent, a discussion on the projection of gender-biased stereotypes, and their role and responsibility in uploading images.  By sharing experiences, beliefs, or feelings with you, this will provide an even more valuable opportunity for personal development – and a wonderful opportunity for you to connect with your daughter on a meaningful level.  Personal Development lessons are an opportunity for students to learn about topics that may not necessarily fall under the academic curriculum but are, nonetheless, just as crucial for students' personal growth and development.

Netball Cross Campus Challenge

Mount Alvernia students endured an unprecedented slump against Padua College in the annual Year 12 Netball Challenge.  Managing to lead up until the last quarter, the players were somewhat disappointed by the result.  The games - played in excellent weather conditions - showcased the exuberant spirit of the College, with loud cheering booming from the bleachers, and sidelines erupting.  In the San Damiano, the community witnessed the power of determination and skilful prowess of players - simply enthralling spectators.  While the College has successfully defeated Padua players' dextrous skills in the past, our team was spectacular in defence, blocking the opposition, drawing turnovers, and positioning the attacks to score effortlessly.  The event was successful in showcasing the spirit of the College - the essence of our community.

Yellow Day

The idea of Yellow Day formed in the school holidays while the Student Leadership Team brainstormed to launch our first project as senior leaders.  Within seconds of sitting down, our focus was clear - to organise a day to show our support for Year 12 student Megan Reid in her battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.  So, throughout the term, in countless boardroom meetings with frenzied texts, the group fine-tuned our plan for Yellow Day. Industriously, we worked to ensure the day was memorable.  Thus, students responded by spectacularly lining up in Francis Court stretching around to the Picnic Rug - eager to participate in the activities.  With face painting, cupcakes, and crafted gifts - sold out by the end of Break 1- the community embraced the project in true Franciscan spirit.

It was a privilege to be a part of the organising committee to support an inspiring peer and close friend who has embarked on a journey with such grace and dignity - an amazing student who embodies the values of our community.  On behalf of the Student Leadership Team, I wish to express our gratitude to the College for supporting and making the day such a great success.  I also encourage your daughters to continue wearing their yellow wristbands and champion Megan Reid on her social media platform by donating to the organisations which fund childhood cancer research.  On behalf of the Student Leadership Team, I wish to express our sincere thanks to Ms Annette Butterworth, Deputy Principal – Student Development, and the College Leadership Team for encouraging the community to participate.

I wish to congratulate all students on their fruitful contributions to the college community this term.  As St Paul reminds us in his letter to the Corinthians, “There is one body, but it has many parts.  But all its many parts makes up its body … All of them will take care of one another.  If one part suffers, every parts suffers with it.  If one part is honoured, every part shares in its joy.  Each one of you is part of it.”  So too students are the integral threads that are woven to create the rich fabric of our Mount Alvernia community.
