Year 3/4

Incursion

The 3/4 classes participated in an Orienteering Incursion at the end of Term 1. This incursion was about thinking outside the square to navigate their way around the school using cryptic clues and augmented reality!

The incursion  focused on direction, orientation and using compasses.  Students took part in a treasure hunt around the school using I Pads. The students learnt the importance of compasses and teamwork. They had to work closely together to find the answers  to score  points.

Wellbeing

In Term 1, in our Wellbeing sessions, we have been learning about our emotions. We have expanded our vocabulary in order to describe our emotions more accurately. A “Catastrophe Scale” was used to categorise events and the subsequent emotion we may feel in response. The intensity of emotion we can feel was then related to the significance of events occurring, both good things and bad things.

In learning about our emotions, we discussed the ways in which we can “de-escalate”; ways of bringing our emotions down from a heightened state to a more manageable state. We shared some of our ideas of “Calm Down” activities, noting that different activities may suit different people; you need to find things that would work for you when trying to de-escalate.Here are some of our class “Calm Down”

Ideas:

  • Dancing
  • Listening to music
  • Change of sceneExercise
  • Go for a walk
  • Mindful colouring
  • Lego building
  • Meditation
  • Deep breathing

We then created our own Emotions Jars, with water, glue and glitter. The glitter represents our emotional state. When we are calm, the glitter is settled. When something happens (good OR bad), our emotions are shaken up, swirling and erratic. So when we stop and do a “Calm Down” activity, our emotions can settle and we feel more in control. Like watching the glitter settle once it isn’t being shaken around!

We really enjoyed learning about our emotions and LOVED the glitter jars. It really helped us to explore and understand how complex emotions can be!

Religious Education

In 3/4  we have been learning about the Resurrection of Jesus. The students have been exploring how Jesus’ presence is always with us in some form. The students recorded ways in which they feel Jesus’ presence -

  • I feel close to Jesus when I am in the garden.
  • I feel close to Jesus when I am by myself under my umbrella tree.
  • I feel close to Jesus when I am in the church because it is God’s home.
  • I feel close to Jesus when I see a rainbow in the sky.
