Teacher - Business Management
The study of VCE Business Management really comes to life when students have the opportunity to engage with real life business people who can add meaning and context to abstract theories for students who are just starting their VCE journey.
I was so pleased when Ismet (Izzy) Ceylan, BSC alumnus (Class of 2018) agreed to come to speak to the Year 11 Business Management class about starting his own business. In preparation, students designed questions that related to their first area of study – The Business Idea.
Izzy spoke about starting a Business Degree at Latrobe University and seeking flexibility in his work life after having worked for a few years in a fast food chain and a supermarket.
With his degree almost completed, Izzy and his partner opened Barbers of Pascoe a year ago and are are currently looking to grow the business. Izzy addressed a range of issues that related directly to student learning including gaining the necessary skills and qualities required for business management, identifying business opportunities, as well as ways in which his business contributes to our economic and social wellbeing.
Izzy stated that he enjoyed the opportunity to ‘give back’ to BSC and to relate to young people interested in starting or working within businesses in the future. We look forward to building a program of guest speakers to enrich students learning in this subject.
BSC takes this opportunity to thank Izzy for generously sharing his time and experience with our current students. Barbers of Pascoe is located at 1/9 Pascoe Street, Pascoe Vale and Izzy looks forward to seeing BSC students and alumni visiting his business!

It was good to have a guest speaker come in because it shows the reality of opening and running a business, he showed us how he started up his business and explained that you need to put a lot of time and effort into it.
Hamish Talko
I learned about the process of how someone goes from graduating high school to starting and expanding a business. I also learnt about some of the pros and cons of having a partnership.
Holly Baker
It gave us a practical perceptive of what it’s like to start up and run a business and the processes, challenges, and risks involved. As he said learning the theory is very different from the reality, so it was helpful to know/learn about both perspectives.
Daniel Rispoli
It was good to have a guest speaker come in as it helped us apply our business theory knowledge to an actual business.
Layla Abdul-Wahed
Having a guest speaker who owns a business come to our class was good because it showed us that if you try hard enough and are willing to take risks, then almost anyone can be an entrepreneur. It also showed us the real life responsibilities of being a business owner.

I discovered that risk management is a big part of a business succeeding and reaching its fullest potential.
