News from our Classrooms

Foundation News

The Foundation students are working very well and following the St Fidelis school rules.

This week as part of our current inquiry unit “What is my History and How do I know?’ the students are bringing in artefacts from their own history to share with the class. Artefacts can include an item of clothing, a baptismal candle, a favourite baby toy, a favourite book, the hospital name bracelet or even their first pair of shoes. Last week they shared how their names came to be chosen. It was interesting for everyone to hear how other students names were decided upon.

During the week, the students will be bringing home some sheets to find out from their parents and grandparents what was their favourite toy when they were younger. These sheets are due back at school on Wednesday 6th November after the long weekend.

This week in maths we are looking at patterns. The students will be creating a continuing pattern with a different number of elements. They will make a pattern and a partner will continue the pattern. They will be recording patterns that they make.

What a wonderful Italian Day we enjoyed last Tuesday. The students came to school in their Italian costumes, enjoyed making pasta at the incursion run by “Big Pocket” and had lots of fun creating their very own Leaning Tower of Pisa with their buddies. The chocolate, strawberry and lemon gelato was a enjoyable addition to the lunches! Thank you to Signora Caruana for organising such a fantastic day for the whole school to celebrate.

I will be taking some Long Service Leave from Wednesday 30th October until Thursday 14th November so PLW will be in the very capable hands of Mrs Jan Taylor during my absence.

Year 1/2 News

Our Big Question for Inquiry is “How Can I Learn About Other People's Lives and Why Does It Matter?”  The students have been learning about different cultures. They experienced making pasta, singing songs and listening to various Italian stories on our exciting Italian Day. The students listened to a guest speaker talk about her experiences in the Solomon Islands. They reflected on how they might feel if they went to a different school and what similarities and differences there might be between St Fidelis and the school in the Solomon Islands.

In Religion, the students are learning how to read the Bible.

In Literacy, they have been focussing on making connections in different texts and writing ‘Show Don't Tell’ paragraphs.

In Numeracy, the students are learning how to tell the time using analogue and digital clocks.

Year 3/4 News

Pope Francis has named this month an “Extraordinary Month of Mission”. On the 23rd of October, the Year 3/4 students attended the Annual Children’s Mission Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral in East Melbourne.

As Catholics our mission is to act as the Good Samaritan did in Luke 10: 25-37. We have the responsibility to nurture, love, respect and offer help to those in need.

After the mass the students responded by writing prayers of thanks to God.

Dear Lord,

You have given us the power and strength to look upon the world with hope and that we can make it a better place.

Thank you for giving us a wonderful home to live in, loyal friends and family and our lovely school who inspires us to help others in need.

Please help us to reach out our hands to the families in Ghana so they can have an extraordinary life that they deserve.

Amen

Luana and Siearra 3/4LM

Socktober

On the 31st of October, the students at St Fidelis will need to wear colourful, crazy socks to help raise money for the families in Ghana (gold coin donation). Lets sock it to poverty!

Year 5/6 News

The Year 5/6 students thoroughly enjoyed helping their Foundation buddies make pasta and their leaning towers of Pisa during St Fidelis Italian Day.

The pasta workshop had music, story-telling and all of the students enjoyed using the pasta making machines to make tagliatelle to take home. We hope you enjoyed the taste of the fresh pasta for dinner.

Next Tuesday, the 5/6 students will meet Peter Khalil, who is the MP for the labor party for the electorate of Wills. They will be asking him about his role as a member of Parliament in Victoria and questions about citizenship and topics related to our Inquiry unit, "What makes us Australian?".

The students in 5/6 are continuing to progress wonderfully in all areas of the curriculum and we are very proud of their learning this term so far.

Well done, keep it up 5/6 students.
