Aerosol Sprays Warning

Work Health & Safety Issue - Aerosol Sprays

Some members of the Cowra High School community suffer severe allergies and adverse reactions to aerosol sprays or perfumes that can act as a trigger to a serious asthma attack, or cause severe respiratory distress. In one of our students the reaction is so severe that exposure can be a life threatening situation, resulting in the student being transported to hospital in an ambulance. This unfortunately has happened to that student a number of times this year and twice very recently.

To manage the risk associated with the use of these products we have put the following measures in place.

  • Aerosols are banned from school premises, excursions, sporting events and all school related activities
  • Students are encouraged to follow correct hygiene procedures by applying deodorant at home after showering: a good deodorant will last all day if applied to clean skin before dressing
  • Roll-on and stick deodorants are permitted at school

All members of the school community have the right to a safe working and learning environment. We all need to be aware of our responsibility to the safety of ourselves and others in our shared environment.

Remember: No student is to use or bring aerosol deodorants or sprays to school.

Teachers have been asked to confiscate any aerosol products found at school and bring them to the Deputy Principals. Parents will be informed that the products have been collected from their son or daughter and that they can call into the school and collect the product. Further infringements will be dealt with through the discipline system. Thank you for considering the health and safety of others.

We encourage all members of the school community to be part of the solution to what is a life threatening situation for one of our students
