White Ribbon "Respect-Ed" Day
Last Thursday Cowra High hosted a White Ribbon Community Concert put on by Community Health - Social workers, Domestic Violence Counsellors, most Cowra schools, Cowra Youth Council, Cowra Shire Council, Rotary Cowra, Headspace Cowra & Orange Police.
This day was made possible by the hard work of a small team of Community Health workers and school teachers who want to make Cowra students aware of the change that they can make in their lives. They can be positive role models for all youth and foster and encourage male leadership in the prevention of violence against women.
The White Ribbon Campaign is about recognising the positive role that men play in preventing violence against women based on the understanding that most men are not violent. Good men will not sit on the sidelines while those they love are at risk of harm.
At the concert most of the school groups put on an active display to represent their school. Winners of the writing competitions read their winning entries and were presented by the Mayor Bill West with a cash prize donated by the Cowra Youth Council. Also during the concert the males were asked to stand out the front of the gathered students of Cowra and take a pledge. Over 1000 white ribbons, made by DV sufferers, were given to the students and community members.
Following the concert some men from Rotary donated their time to cook 800+ sausages for the crowd and then the students were free to move around the quadrangle and visit the many stalls on display.
