Course Selection Process Year 12 2018

Yr 12 Course Selection 2018 – Wednesday August 30

Over the next few weeks current Year 11 students will be considering their course selection for Year 12, 2018. This involves investigating how current study plans connect to a student’s future pathways. The selection of Year 12 subjects is an important decision and requires an understanding of the pathways available. Students need to be clear about their future pathways and current level of achievement and select subjects accordingly. It is also important to note that student achievement in Year 11 will be taken into consideration during the course selection process.

There are a number of students who have received two or more N results in semester 1. The school’s promotion policy states that students must achieve a Satisfactory result in at least 75% of the units undertaken in a calendar year. For a Year 11 VCE student this typically means that no more than three N’s can be awarded before promotion to Year 12 is placed in jeopardy.

Students will be submitting subject choices online via Webpreferences between Friday August 11 and Friday August 25. Students will then be required to attend a course selection interview on Wednesday August 30 with senior staff member at the College.

We encourage you to attend this course selection day with your son/daughter in order to be part of the decision making process for their 2017 course selection.

Parents and students will be allocated a time to attend a subject counseling session between 9:00am and 4:00pm on this day.

Information regarding this day will be sent out early August.

The College looks forward to meeting with you and your son/daughter to finalise enrolment for 2018.

2018 Tertiary Applications:  VTAC

2018 Tertiary applications are conducted online via VTAC.   VTAC opens for applications at 9am on 7 August 2017. The cost of the application is $35 providing that you apply before 28 September 2017 (5pm). While you need to apply by these deadlines, you don’t have to pay your fee straight away.  There are no additional fees for submitting a SEAS or Scholarship application or changing your preferences. You can also make changes to your application at different times throughout the year.

The VTAC process is quite straight forward and all Year 12 students will be given a VTAC Mag, ABC of applying publication and will also be taken through the application process during an Assembly in the next few weeks.  Students are also encouraged to book a careers appointment if they would like to receive any help with the VTAC application process at all including SEAS, Scholarship and any other Pathway assistance.

New VTAC app available – now FREE and with 2018 course information

by VTAC

VTAC app is now available for iOS and Android devices. There are a number of exciting changes:

  • The app is now named "The VTAC App" instead of "VTAC CourseSearch" to reflect the growing number of current and future features.
  • The app is now FREE to download and use to enable easy access to course information for all applicants.
  • The app now contains the Prerequisite and Course Explorer, allowing Year 10 students to download the app and experiment with VCE study programs and their course options. The app will update automatically with course information, so Year 10 students can download the app now and keep using it all the way through Year 12.
  • Course information for 2018 is now available in the app. This will also be available on the web version of CourseSearch from Monday 31 July.

To download the VTAC app, just search for VTAC in the app store on your device.

All Year 12 students are encouraged to make an appointment with one of the careers counsellors to discuss their application process.  albj@crcsydenham.net, peem@crcsydenham.net , mezd@crcsydenham.net

University Open Day 2017

If you are considering studying at TAFE or university after school, it is crucial that you attend Open Days.

Throughout the year, vocational and tertiary institutions open their doors to the public and showcase their courses, accommodation, scholarships, pathway courses, student services and their ‘point of difference’. At an Open Day, you will be able to:

  • Get a feel for the culture of the campus
  • Learn about courses and career options
  • Undertake campus and accommodation tours led by current students
  • Speak directly to students and lecturers about the courses or careers you are interested in
  • Compare the course area you are interested in at different institutions
  • Learn about student sports and societies you can join and be active in
  • Get course counselling and guidance
  • Attend information sessions and workshops
  • Watch live demonstrations
  • Listen to bands, eat lots of food, participate in activities and have fun!

Don’t just pick a course at an institution without visiting the campus – you potentially will be spending several years studying there and spending tens of thousands of dollars on your course and accommodation. It’s worth making the effort.

By now you should have identified institutions you would like to visit, found out their open day dates and downloaded their open day programs.

Once you have the programs, make a list of the information sessions you would like to attend.

If you have time, try and attend information sessions on topics like pathways, scholarships, accommodation and overseas exchange programs.

If you are unsure what to ask on the day, Victoria University has developed some questions you can ask:

  • Are there any prerequisite subjects I need to study for this course?
  • What study scores/ATAR do I need to achieve to get into this course?
  • Do I need to attend an audition, have an interview or present a folio as part of the selection process?
  • Are there any other ways into this course other than through a VTAC application?
  • Can I do a vocational course first which might then lead into a university course?
  • What is the difference between TAFE and university study?
  • If I can’t get into this course, is there a similar course at this institution I can apply for?
  • What are the core subjects for this course and are there any electives?
  • How many hours per week are spent in class and can I study part time?
  • Can I defer the course?
  • What kind of jobs do graduates of this course generally get?
  • Are there any scholarships available?
