Student Absences

An absence from any class is considered to be an “unapproved absence”, except for the following circumstances that will allow for an “approved absence”:

  • A medical certificate that complies with the guidelines of the Australian Medical Association regarding the period of illness accompanied by a note or phone call from a parent/guardian is provided;
  • A statutory declaration made by parents/guardians is provided. This may be used only to approve an absence due to illness for a single day and only if it is provided to the College on the school day following the absence. A statutory declaration will not be accepted to approve absences for classes where a School Assessed Coursework task (SAC) is scheduled.

Twilight Open Evening and Careers Expo at Catholic Regional College Sydenham on Wednesday 2 August 2017

The Twilight Open Evening provides students and their parents with vital information about course selection and pathway planning. It is essential that all students in Year 11 or 12 at the College in 2018 and at least one parent attend the evening as vital course selection information will be provided.

The following information provides an overview of the day’s events:

Wednesday 2 August 1.00pm – 3.30pm: Student Information Sessions and Careers Expo

Year 10 students from Catholic Regional College Caroline Springs, St Albans and North Keilor will be transported to Catholic Regional College Sydenham for the afternoon.

Students will be placed into groups and will be presented with information regarding the full variety of programs on offer at Catholic Regional College Sydenham. These presentations will provide students with information about the subjects available for study and the career options that these subjects can lead to. Students will also have the opportunity to tour some of the specialist facilities at the College including the Trade Training Centre and to attend the Careers Expo to gain pathway information.

This afternoon is designed specifically for students and will provide them with a general overview of the options available to them at Catholic Regional College Sydenham.

Wednesday August 2 5.00pm – 8.30 pm: Twilight Open Evening

The Twilight Open Evening has four elements.

  1. Learning Area Displays in the College Hall: Families are invited to visit the College from 5.00pm to review each of the subject areas, meet with teaching staff to receive valuable advice about subject requirements and course selection. We recommend that families should allow at least one full hour in order to visit subject displays. Current students will also be on hand to provide insights into subject and course selection.
  2. Careers Expo:  The Careers Expo will provide an opportunity to research and receive quality information from our exhibitors regarding employment, apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE institutes, Universities and both Government and Private Providers.   This will enable families to develop an understanding of the post school pathway options available to students and how their choice of programs will influence their future options. Exhibitors include: The University of Melbourne, RMIT, Victoria University, Melbourne Polytechnic, Monash University, Whitehouse Institute, Jetset Travel, Australian Catholic University, and Apprenticeships Group Australia.
  3. Formal Parent Information Sessions: These compulsory College information sessions will be held in the Crate Theatre between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on the evening.

Session 1: 5.30 – 6.00pm Session 2: 6.15 – 6.45pm Session 3: 7.00 -  7.30pm

  1. Information Sessions - VET and VCAL Programs - St Joseph’s VCAL Centre

This session is for the families of students currently in Year 9 / 10 who are considering entering the VCAL Program or studying a VET subject in 2018. The session will provide information about how VET and VCAL programs are offered and the requirements of these programs for students of the College.

Free meningococcal ACWY vaccine for

Years 11 and 12

In 2017 the Victorian Secondary School Vaccine Program will offer free meningococcal ACWY vaccine to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The vaccine provides protection against four strains of meningococcal disease (ACWY) and is administered as a single dose.

Parents/guardians of Year 11 and 12 students should look out for the Meningococcal ACWY Secondary School Vaccine Program consent card coming via Auspost mail at the beginning of August. You need to read the information, complete and return the card regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

Adolescents are at increased risk of meningococcal disease. Although uncommon, it can become life-threatening, very quickly. There are different strains of meningococcal bacteria known by letters of the alphabet, including meningococcal A, B, C, W and Y. In recent years, the meningococcal W strain has increased across Australia, with Victoria experiencing 11 cases to date in 2017 and 48 cases in 2016, compared to 17 cases in 2015, four in 2014 and one in 2013. It is now the predominant strain in Victoria.

The Brimbank Council immunisation service may contact you about the meningococcal ACWY vaccine program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to local councils for this purpose. Contact the school in writing by Friday 4th August 2017 if you do not want your contact details given to the Brimbank Council immunisation service. This can be sent by email to director.community@crcsydenham.net  or in writing to Catholic Regional College Sydenham PO BOX 2192, Taylors Lakes VIC 3038.
