Math Philosophy GATSTA Cluster Day

Thursday 22nd March, 2018

Last Thursday St Pius X hosted the above Cluster Day. Professor Mark Colyvan, Professor of Philosophy at Sydney University, presented a tutorial on “Mathematics meets Democracy” to a group of 60+ year 10 students from St Pius X College, Mercy College Chatswood, St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill, Rosebank College Five Dock and Casimir Catholic College Marrickville.

Students completed a Community of Inquiry reflecting upon Arrow’s Impossibility Result, explained by Professor Colyvan, before undertaking a drama skit called ‘The Numbers Strike’ where they had 25 minutes to create a performance showing a scenario where numbers were no longer working. They needed to ensure a role for every member of their group and they needed to reflect upon how society would work without numbers.

This was a spectacular day of information, reflection and creation. The teachers reflected that this was a unique experience for us all to see our students challenged outside of the classroom. They needed to engage with rigorous content, show reflection and understanding and create scenarios in a variety of settings. In all a highly successful day for our Year 10 Math students.

Thank you to Professor Colyvan who gives his time free of charge and thank you to GATSTA for the provision of this terrific opportunity.

Call for volunteer Parent-Provision helpers

Would you like to have a go being a Parent-Provision Helper? The Learning Support and Enrichment (LSE) Department is responsible for managing and administering the Provisions Program for students in Years 5-12 as they undertake  tests, exams and assessments throughout the school year. However, we are often in need of ‘extra hands’ to help us provide readers, scribes or support person(s) for a range of students with diverse support needs who qualify for such provisions, on the basis of a confirmed disability.  We also assist students who may have a temporary injury such as a broken arm or other hand or shoulder injury.

If you have an hour or two free, during school hours, we would greatly appreciate the help of any interested parents and carers in the St Pius community, who may be available on one or more occasions during the school terms, for the above purpose. We are looking for the occasional help, of those with some spare time, as you assist just one of the above students to assist them by reading or writing on their test papers. Please note that we would not ask you to administer provisions for your own son or other student in your son’s year.

If you are interested or wish to ask a question about your possible involvement in the SPX Provisions Program, please feel free to contact Joanne, LSE Coordinator, via email: JRahebMol@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au

Provisions for tests, exams, assessment tasks – for Years 5-12

The purpose of the Provisions program at St Pius X College is to assist identified students in Years 5-12 who have learning and support needs, at their most stressful times in the school year – namely in tests, exams and during timed written in-class assessments.
